had both for a while but only really used the PS3 as a bluray player... once the newer generation players dropped in price i didnt have a need for it anymore so i sold it.
for the time of gamer i am i prefer xbox. yes you have to pay for online access and the non-slim versions are louder than my Dyson vacuum but i still prefer it.
Xbox Pros and Cons
PS3 pros and cons
all the blockbuster titles are multiplatform (COD, mortal combat, etc) and the game series i care most about (halo) is xbox only.
easy decision for me since Halo is xbox only but really there is no "best system" only the one you prefer.

Xbox Pros and Cons
- good controllers
- great games
- surprisingly good tech support
- loud
- prone to failure, though i have never had a single xbox or 360 fail
- not as sexy looking as PS3
PS3 pros and cons
- fastest hardware... to bad nothign takes advantage of it...
- controller designed for children/pigmy hands
- game charecters always resemble emo band members
- Final Fantasy series is the only reason to own it.

I have both. PS3 250gb and Xbox 360 Elite. I play the Elite more because of my CoD clan ( chicken always has fun with us lol ) and my PS3 is relegated to media streaming duties when I'm not playing ModNation or BF:BC2.
Just for note, I already payed for my Halo Reach console

I've had both for a while.
the ps3 collects DUST! if it didnt have a bluray player it wouldve been a waste of money.
as a "videogame" console, 360 has always been the clear winner.
the controller ergonomics on the ps3 is dated, the placement of the analog sticks in the middle are just not as well placed as the 360. MS made a great move in this design in the first xbox, then improved on the s-ctonroller.
and lets not talk about online gaming, live has always blew out the ps3 online capabilities, ps3 has always been playing catchup. yea ps3 is free to play, but the benefits and overall experience is worth the lil amount you have to pay.
as for games on both consoles, 360 always plays better, better controller, better online play.
as for first party games.. come on is this a joke? ps3 has what, gran turismo that will be coming out in 2020? MGS and killzone 2, yay hay. but still for a "videogame" console.. boo.
and i HEAR a big plus for owning a 360 is FREE GAMES, backups for all games. dont have to pay a dime ever.
if it RROD, a few free games pay for it to buy a new one that has new design.
and PLEASE, ONE OF THEM PLAY MKV NATIVELY WITHOUT THE NEED FOR BS TRANSCODING CRAP AND CONVERTING.

I have both and play the PS3 more. I'll take free online gaming over "better" online gaming anyday, and its not like PSN is that bad. Pretty much only picked up the 360 for its exclusives and only really play Forza 3 on it. Everything else pretty much goes to the PS3, although I have a lot more friends and family with PS3's than 360's.
It really comes down to what you want either for. Exclusives aren't in huge numbers so you won't really be missing out on too much there. If your friends have 360's and you want to play online with them, then a 360 will be your prime choice but you'll have to pay to play online. But if you want free online gaming and like the controller more then the PS3 will be your best choice.
Your going to get good/great gaming either way you go. The 360 might not have the best reliability track record, but it does have a huge game library and what some call better online gaming. And if your friends have 360's your going to want to play with them. But you can always make new friends

Have the 360 for several years with like 30+ games. Never once had an issue with the xbox. I was a fan of the dreamcast controller, and since the xbox is somewhat similar, it's great as well.
Never liked the ps controller. IMO it sucks. It's outdated. The analog sticks aren't accurate, and they have no feedback when you move it. The trigger buttons are also crap since you can't vary the input by much (has like only 2 settings? medium and fully depressed?).

I've had a PS3 for 3 years and love it. Had a 360 and sold it after 2 weeks. It was too loud, the controller sucks, and not being a fan of multiplayer on-line BS or FPS I had no desire to keep it.
XBL arcade tends to have more cheap games to DL then PSN. Being a PS1 & PS2 fan, I play them games just as often as PS3 games.

I own both, a 2nd gen ps3 (40gb with no back-compat) and a launch 360 refurb (original launch RRoD'd)
Lately I've been playing the ps3 more due to several reasons:
-it's more quiet and it generates less heat. The new 360 S is supposed to cure the noise but it still runs hot as hell.
-ps3 has no region locked games, I played a bunch of BlazBlue: CS before the NA release, as well as the JP Remake of No More Heroes. The 360 suffers from region locked games - jp region games mostly are locked to their region, but a lot of NA games are not, go figure.
-the ps3 allows use of external hdds for savegames/DLd demos/Game installs/etc, as well as usb peripherals like controllers n stuff. 360 is largely locked down to proprietary peripherals that have the MS ok working in them. I can use my old logitech wheel I bought for Gran Turismo 4 on the ps3, if I want a wheel on the 360 I hafta buy an all new wheel. USB thumb drives are limited to 16 gb on the 360. Not sure on HDDs if they're limited on size but I'm pretty sure they are
-when I play any multi (very rarely), its free on the ps3. For how long it'll stay free though, is uncertain. Sony has seen the green MS has raked in
The 360 is not without its good points though:
-the 360/pc exclusives are great, and a lot of multi-platform games have a tendency of running better on the 360. Most recent glaringly obvious example was Bayonetta, the ps3 version had atrocious load times, which weren't really helped even with an hdd install.
-the online experience of xbox live is much more well done, from what friends tell me. I used to have a gold live account but never used it, so I cannot comment directly on it.
-the system updates and game patches on the 360 are much less intrusive than on the ps3. If you aren't up to date on a game version or system firmware, the 360 will simply disconnect you from Live, should you choose not to update, most of the time. The ps3 will require you to run updates if your firmware isn't of proper version required of the game, or you will not be allowed to play. Worst of all this process can take anywhere from a half hour to an hour.
-The 360 runs a pretty fast dvd drive, whereas the ps3 runs a slow BD drive. Games tend suffer from longer load/seek times on the ps3 opposed to the 360.
Hardware woes aside, if both ran the same, I'd go to where the games I want are. At the moment, that would be the 360, if not for region locks and the fact that its summer, I dont need another heat source in my room.
