Would you be upset/angry/jealous/envious if a 16-18 year old got an STi?
Hmm you sound a tad bitter considering the fact the you've been getting high since the 70's. I thought potheads were mellow.
j/k But yeah kids who never earn anything on their own will never learn the real value of what they have. Some may even go to parking lots to do donuts and crash their car while trying to flee from an old lady? haha

My old man only had one car he wouldn't let me drive it alone. I rode a 10-speed until my second year at the university.
Then I bought a used austin-healey sprite.

it makes sense in the grand scheme of things.... to get angry about someone else w/ a better "tool for survival". it just must suck to have those instincts/behaviors in todays society where you can't walk up and beat them over the head with a club and steal their stuff.

The differences between the "haves" and the "have nots" is a lot larger now. A lot of the parents earn decent money and have inherited wealth from their own parents, and they like nothing more than to show their conspicious-consumption oriented friends how successful they are by giving their spoiled brats expensive cars to drive around.

Envy or hate? No, I got a brand new 325 drop top and a 2 month trip in Europe the day I graduated for having straight A's my entire life(well I got a C in PE in the 6th grade because I broke my leg and had to sit on my butt for a few months), although I would have to ask what the reasoning is for putting a $30k+ car in the hands of a kid, none the less a weapon like an STi. Most of these kids with nice cars are just extensions of their parents need to show off. If/When the kid smashes it into a guard rail or worse I'd have to throw the "I told you so" card.
I plan on doing exactly what was one for me for my first car, I had a '64 bug. When my son is 14 we'll go find a car that needs a little love. We'll spend the next 2 years getting it back in shape. When he's old enough to drive his insurance costs and gas will be offset by the grades he keeps. If he keeps his nose in the books he'll have a free ride. If he doesn't do so well he'll need an alternative source of income to keep his car on the road, the more he screws up the more hours he'll have to put in at McDonalds to sustain his wheels.

I do get a little angry... but not at the kids.... at the irresponsible parents.
You'd be better off handing them a loaded gun. At least most 16-18 year olds know and understand that a gun will kill you and others if not handled carefully. They seem to forget this when that loaded gun is in the form of a high performance car.

If you are lucky enough to have an STi before you're 20, then good for you. Don't flaunt it and be responsible. Drive within your limits and respect the power that's underneath the hood.

I actually pity kids who's parents get them real nice cars at 16. Because, unless their parents are going to support them their whole lives or they themselves are genius/player/hustler...they're never gonna get as nice a car again. It would suck if the nicest car I ever had in my life was when I was 16-18.

Half of these kids stay on the tit for life. I'd say a new car at 16 does NOT instill a sense of reality in am immature kid.

Hum….
as someone that had a nice car in highschool, I know what its like to have people hate you or look down on you just for driving a nicer car. Shoot a lot of people i went to school with still hate me and they never even knew me other then just by face and name. :weird:
Go figure…
And I really don’t see anything wrong with getting your kids nice things… I know that when my kids get old enough id like nothing but for them to be rewarded with a nice car to drive in exchange for good behavior and grades… why? Not so I look cooler or as a extension of my wealthiness. But as leverage to keep my kids on track and have something to work for… (gas, maintenance, parts, ect.)
I thank my parents for the sacrifice they made to get me a nice car while I was in high school, it taught me a lot and gave me hobby.
-- it also taught me a thing or two about REAL FRIENDS!
And yes it is a world of have and the have nots… and the nots will always envy the haves that’s just the way life is.

Now that I look back though, I doubt I will ever buy my kid a new car, let alone something along the lines of a WRX. I mean, my parent's couldn't help me with a car growing up and so I worked hard and got my own. I don't know if I'm better of for that, but I continued to work hard thru my life to own my 350z and my WRX that I have now.

I don't think it really matters if a kid has a WRX or STI when they are still minors. It is what they do with the car that matters. Most minors that I know that owns a WRX or STI, can't handle that much power. I got my suby at the age of 17, but that was after I went through learning how to drive a car to its limits on 2 AE86s and 1 240Z. Now that I know what the limits of certain cars are, I really do appriciate my WRX and all of the freakin 260hp mine has. I do pity certain kids who bring their subies to the mountains and total it because they had no real driving experience, especially on a track.
A message to all minors with a suby: DO NOT PUSH THE CAR UNTIL YOU CAN AFFORD RACING SCHOOL ON A TRACK.
