Would you buy a 'renewable' water softening system?
Some of you probably have seen the Spotless water softening system from Costco for like $350 or so. Would you be interested in smaller single cartridge system for ~$60-70. The cool thing about this one is that you can 'renew' it after it stops working. a new cartridge is good for about 90 gallons and the renew cost is about $5.
This system is for those have hard water problem and/or too lazy to dry the car after a wash.

someone has to use all the water people are saving

I showed this to my buddy who lives out in Tracy. He said he would probably buy 2 if they became available. I wouldn't mind getting one for myself too if the price is truly $70 or less with $5 replaceable cartridges.

there is also a 'dual cartridge' system if the water supply is really bad...
$5 is not for a new cartridge, but it's the cost to buy softener salt to 'renew' the cartridge.
The down side of this comparing to the Spotless unit is that it doesn't have a meter to tell you to change out, it's not as big, therefore less gallon filtering.
I believe the Spotless large unit can filter ~350 gallon. So a new unit from Costco would run you about ~$.53 per gallon and ~$.21/gallon on refill.
This unit would run about ~$.78/gallon on a new unit, ~$.22/gallon on new cartridge, ~$.06 on renewal. and initial cost is WAY cheaper too!

I don't think that would work at my house. We have an industrial softener and it's not doing jack... hell right now my water smells kind of like sulfur.

I think Mr Clean comes out to about the same (per gallon) as the low cost filter that I am looking at. However, with Mr. Clean, you have no control over the out flow. As in, you can't use it with a pressure washer, different nozzles, attachments, etc. Also, you can't reuse the cartridge (generate more waste)...
