I always thought water poisoning was caused by just having to "thin" blood but the previous poster talked of electrolyte and mineral deficiency.

So could you chug a lot of gatorade and not die?

I think thats supposed to be one of the things about Gatorade - because it has electrolytes, its a lot better for you when you are drinking a lot of liquid from working a lot. In short, afaik yes.

As far as I know, the issue is that when you have too much water in your system, the sodium levels go way down, and the cells in your body transfer water in and out through the cell membranes, and because its so diluted on the outside of the cell, the inside of the cell needs to reach the same water:sodium ratios, and that results in the cells taking in too much water and bursting. I think. If I'm wrong someone correct me.

I just listened to the radio show. I really can't help but feel pissed off. I honestly want to F those DJ's up right now. Some kids lost their mother because some stupid @ss poeple thought it was ok to knowningly put peoples lives at risk for a Wii. And as much as you can blame the people that joined in on the game I have to bring it back to the people that had the contest. They talked them out of leaving by telling them that their bodies will force them to vomite when they had too much. I'd be willing to bet my WRX that none of those DJ's have any medical diplomas to give them ANY real knowledge that would back up what they said. I'm sorry I may be venting here but I feel really bad and I wish that family the best and although I don't know them I feel for them.
Venting over... for now.

G.
