Question Will the check engine light go away?

Will the check engine light turn off automatically? If so how long will it take for the check engine light to turn off? Is there any way to turn it off manually?

Info:
Stock '02 WRX
Probably the gas cap. Occurred about 100 miles after filling the tank.

have daredevil check it with his handy OBD scanner-

it's always good to know whether it's just a one time error code for a mis-fire or fuel vapor recovery problem caused by a loose gas cap, or if it's something more serious

- and you can't really tell without getting the numbers off the computer

Don't just reset it by pulling the battery. This erases the code from memory so it can't be read later (unless it comes back), and it doesn't "fix" anything. Also doing a power-disconnect reset will clear out all the adaptive (learned) values in the ECU so it has to start the learning process all over again, and there is no reason to do this if you don't otherwise have to.
Get the code read to find out what the problem really is. There are too many possible things that can turn on the CEL to speculate what it might be. Even if you're sure it's the gas cap get it scanned anyway.
Unfortunately since you're in CA you can't go to Autozone since they stopped doing free scans there. Try posting in your local forum to see if someone near you has a scanner.
If the problem that caused the CEL to come on is not detected for a certain number of driving cycles, the light will go off on its own. However the code will remain in memory, and still can (and should) be read unless you have done a reset.

Well I think I answered my own question on this one. After driving it for a little bit it turned off, so I think that this is a good sign.

you should get the code read. My cel came on because my front oxygen sensor was going bad It went off after i drove it around for awhile but my gas mileage has gone down and my engine is idling rough. Indicating a bad o2 sensor. The cel could idicate a potential problem with the engine.
