Question whp vs tranny question

hey for all u suby guru's out there ive tried to search this but i jsut cant get a clear cut answer. im just looking for a great daily driver...(so reliability over power...kinda) but i want to make 250-275awhp. but i dont want to change out my turbo or go front mount.

right now i have a
2003 wrx
perrin up pipe
PDE down pipe
HKS carbon-ti
samco intercooler hoses
speedmonkey grounding mod
hallman boost controller

i plan on goin to i-speed (bill) for a ecutek and 2 hours road tuning and 1 hour dyno tuning. good guys btw. but im just worried about my tranny...i noticed that in all the threads i read everyone who upgraded their turbos seemed to have blow their trannys already. so let me know what u guys think! thanx for any info guys

I think I heard of one of TXS' cars stripping gears just by flooring it in 2nd with 400 awhp.

The whole "reliability" thing, or "can my tranny/engine/flux capacitor" take "XXX gigawatts" is really subjective.

Go to SPD tuning (Forgot site), they have good stuff on power and what the engine and tranny can be subjected to.l

It's more accurate to say "above the 200 awhp the reliability of the transmission will take on an ever increasing chance of failing under load."

Get a top mount IC because the stock IC loses a couple pounds of boost due to inefficient piping.

Get the Ion, FP, or deadbolt turbo upgrade and I think 250 awhp is there. I believe the Ion upgraded turbo got 255 or something.

actually i wanted to stay away from upgrading my turbo and ic. ive read that they are really good in tandum. i was hoping to get to 250 or so via tuning and an ecutek. and maybe splitting my mbc and setting it to zero boost. is that possible? that way i can tune it for 17 psi and run at 15psi for street.

Hey Chris,

With what you have, upgrade the top mount intercooler, and see what bill can do first. I think you would pretty close to 230 whp with what you got. I'm willing to bet that Bill can get you that 250 target, but i think you should get a new intercooler.

damnit gagan is there a suby topic u dont know of? haha well if it comes from the mouth of gagan then it cant be wrong. so u think a STI top mount will be good enough or should i be saving to go for a giant top mount? i know the bigger the better but some of those tmic's are huge. i wanted to sti so i can get the sti hoodscoop and sti splitter so i know that there will be a good oem style seal on the tmic. good plan? oh yeah and should i get the tmic before the tuning? or does it not really make a difference?...(kind of a dumb question but still...)

thanx

chris

btw ill be at the next uckk wow its been a long time since i seen u gagan.

the stock wrx tranny can MORE THEN HANDLE below 300 whp, so long as your not an idiot about the way you drive, remember the clutch will be the wek point and use it as such. Meaning USE YOUR FREAKING CLUTCH as much as you can esp on launches etc. My tranny was dealing with 400+ whp for over a year adn what finaly did it in was a drag launch by me where i sorta didnt use the clutch much (READ CLUTCH DROP). This im sure weakned the gears and a few days later when i ROLLED into the throttle (notice i didnt say JAB) first gear simply was reducded to powder. moral of the story is this, dont drive like an idiot and your tranny will last a very long time. So my suggestion would be this, dont upgrade the clutch keep her stock and drive the thing INTELLEGENTLY and your tranny will last a damn long time.

that sounds like very sound advice! thanx. since its my daily driver i would like to keep everything very reliable. and it looks like i am gonna be ok with what i am planning for. but i will be tracking my car and doing a few awd launches in the near future. i just wont be dropping the clutch...im practicing tryin to launch it by slipping in the clutch but im not having much luck.

Using the stock turbo, it's real hard to get past 210-215 wheel hp. However, with a good VF30 setup, you can get 250ish wheel horsepower with all the driveability of stock.
