Yes you can still buy AK's and AR's, just not in CA. Unless you are a peace officer.

2nd:
If you bought those pre-ban then yes they were legal if you were old enough at the time. Your posted birth date of 1980 puts ya in the gray. You would have needed to be 18 years old to buy rifles, and 21 for handguns back then. The ban first went into effect in 1989. You were 9 years old? There were a few years in the 90’s where they were still play’n with the laws. Name changes of the guns extc..worked for a little while. If you bought them then it would have been during this time period. After 2K things have just been getting worse though. If they were bought legally back then they are still legal as long as the owner registered them with the CA DOJ prior to 2001. Sorry, but if ya they were not registered with the CA DOJ, under CA law the owner is now a felon! (the paperwork you did when you bought them from the dealer does not count BTW, The OWNER needed to do the CA DOJ registration)

If you take them to a range the range master has the right to ask and see the CA DOJ registration paperwork. If you do not have it they can take your guns, and call the cops and have your arrested as a felon. The only thing you can do now is to give them over to the state, or store/sell them in some other state...but then ya run the risk of transporting illegal firearms in CA. Also note that if they were your dads, your brothers...extc. They can not give them to you, and you can not pass them on to anyone in CA even if they have the CA DOJ registration. If the owner dies whomever gets them has 90-days to destroy them or turn them over to the state. NO grandfather clause in CA.

If ya live in CA and own guns...you should read this sight often.

Read this

Not try'n to send ya down. I am also a multiple gun owner and I HATE the way CA has ruined our gun rights. Just try'n to warn ya and point out that posting this kind of stuff on the web if ya live in CA may not be the best thing to do.

with whelp, i would agree. owning guns in california is getting more difficult to do these days, if not by law, then by the price of them rising.

this is semi wrong.

for personal use. NO, not even cops.

but for business use, they can...

remember that scene in the docu-drama about the south hollywood bank shootout where the 2 robbers used AUTO AK's...

anyway, in the tv show, it shows the cops going to a gun store and just getting the ARs. kinda like they raided the store...

technically, if the cops did that in real life, they are commiting a felony...

GL,

just curious, have you ever fired a firearm?

nothing like blowing off steam (pun intended) that shooting holes at a paper target, bowling pins, old TVs, etc...
