This sort of question is always asked by people who don't know how to <insert professional skill here> well. These pros get paid as much as they do for 2 reasons:
1 - the demand to be entertained by the skill in question
2 - the level of uniqueness of the skill in question
If everyone could drive like Solberg or Schumacher (or play like Jordan or Bonds) no one would give a crap... and you wouldn't be asking this question. But the truth is, I think very few people really understand what it means to do the amazing things they do (myself included). I have a little idea because I've tried some of those things and I've read a lot about the skills involved. That's really more than most people ever do before they just start talking out of their asses, and its not much. I do, however, know enough to appreaciate the level of supreme talent that they enjoy. Even something at stupid as drag racing takes immense skill... I'd love to see you pilot a 4-second topfuel dragster. I'll be sure to watch from 1/2 a mile away.
The number one reason why no one on this board, I dunno maybe with the exception of someone like Gary Sheehan, can even come close to Solberg (etc.) is because of a gross lack of experience and practice. There are few prodigies in history when it comes to physical skill.

<---Agree's with you, Solberg is the man, not many like him.

J/K, I'd smoke him if he rode on a Vespa...
