Exclamation Who here has had Hernia Surgery?

I'm scheduled to go under the knife in less than a month, and I wanted to hear from anyone here who has had the surgery done.

Like:

How did you feel afterwards?
How long until you returned to work?
How long until you could drive?
How long until you completely recovered?
How long until you could resume working out at the Gymn?

And any other thoughts...

Thanks in advance!

this probably won't help much...but ya did say any thoughts, right?

i had this done when i was a tyke, like 3 or 4 yrs old. all i really remember was that the next morning i could not sit up. and the entire area of incision/surgery throbbed pretty good.

a guy that used to work w/ me had it done a year or so ago. IIRC, he was out for a good 2 months. <edit:fyi, since i work in a warehouse, our job is somewhat physically active.> but then again, he was the type that would milk isht.

what has your doc advised you on?

obviously, just take the doc's advice into consideration & do whatcha-gotta-do! good luck & speedy recovery to ya, dahveed!

Hey man, I had a hernia operation done when I was 18. Pulled it trying to weight lift in high school. Let me learn ya some things about this.
PAIN.
PAIN.
PAIN.
Err, does that answer your first question? I don't know if it's true, but it sure feels that everything the body does is in some way connected to the hernia. When I woke up, I tried to stand up to put my pants and whatnot on, and the blood drained from my entire face and I felt woozy. Driving was out of the question for the next day or two since I was pretty drugged up on pain killers. Even if I weren't on drugs, I don't think I could have pushed a gas pedal for any length of time. The first day, I sneezed and passed out from pain. Seriously. I don't think I was walking on my own until the third day or so. To fully recover? I'd say I was walking around normally in about a week. I didn't go back to the gym until almost a month later, and even then I mostly did cardio.
The only thing I can say is that this was a long time ago, so hopefully your tolerance for pain is higher then mine was at the time. Good luck, man. You'll need it.

I had it done when I was 23. What can I say... it hurts, but hey, it's a surgery. I could start walking around the house pretty much the same day, but very slowly. First drove about a week after the surgery, but I really shouldn't have. Returned to driving in about 2 weeks, but my car was an auto (manual would have taken longer, because my hernia was on the left side) Was able to go for walks around the neighborhood in about 10 days. 3 weeks before returning to work and living on my own without anyone taking care of me (again, because my car was an auto), about 2 months before going back to the gym (but I didn't want to push it.) If you don't want to wait that long before starting to work out again, you can try swimming, that's what I did. Oh, and you won't be able to jack off for about 10 days (at least not without painkillers, heh heh)

i got it several years ago. I didn't have any pain, but the doctors noticed it when I was getting a physical. Just tell them to put you asleep for a few hours and it'll seem like the operation took only 5 minutes. But afterwards you'll hurt like a **** for several weeks. You shouldn't work out for at least 2 months. If you do, work out lightly. You don't want to get another hernia again.

Only problem for me is that the incision area didn't close up properly. Now the skin has extra skin growing on it No infection or anything, it's just a blob of extra skin. Looks fugged up, but oh well.

was the Lakers loss that traumatic for your body?

totally kidding... i hope it all goes well for you man. i think surgeries are usually over-dramatized. wisdom teeth was nothing, knee surgery was chill, etc...
