Where to get snowboarding gear?

Since the snow is here and the resorts are opening up, its time to hit the slopes again. I've only been boarding once and i want to get into it this season. Anyone know where i could get some good deals on a board, bindings, boots? I've been searching craigslist but just wondering where i could get good deals on new stuff.

I used to work at Mel Cottons Sporting Goods in San Jose. I can't attest to their current snowboarding help, but when I worked there we had quality help and great stuff to choose from. I'll reccomend the shop to anyone.

SFO in the city. Great shop, pretty good prices and it's not a huge corporate business.

mel cotton's is overpriced and customer service sucks. try sports basement or tri-city instead. better yet, stop by sierra in sacramento on the way to the slopes.

for a beginner, IMO, put every penny into the boots. Get some really nice comfy boots and it won't matter how suck your board is...well it'll matter. But the difference between a $200 board and a $500 board will be minimized with good boots (and remember, I'm talking about beginners here).

I second the boots suggestion. Buy the best ones you can afford. It will make all the difference being comfortable and warm.

I love Mel Cottons! Ok, so go to ANY MOUNTAIN, they just got bought out by a new company out of Colorado. They are cheaper than anywhere else, if you do find it cheaper they will beat it by 5%. Plus the employees know what they are talking about and also will have great costumer service.

I have a Simms snowboard for sale, $100, only for my Impreza fellow-enthusiasts. I'll throw in bindings (Burton) and boots (size 10 boots). The board is a size 159 cm... good if you're 5'8" or taller, or 160 pounds or more. The board has been used once per season for three seasons -- meaning it has been used only three times, and properly stored for the rest of the year.

The gear is in great condition. If you want it, then PM me. Otherwise I'll keep it in storage and use it myself.

Let it snow, let it snow.

The bindings I have are flow bindings, easiest to get in and out of. Not the strongest support wise for the pros but for a beginner to internmediate they are great. I got mine for $50 at Tri-City. Family owned stores like Tri-city and Mel Cottons tend to be higher in price since they are a single store, not a franchise. Buy a tahoe card from www.snowbomb.com, it has discounts for mel's and 5 free rentals and a free lift tickets as well as loads of discounts for only like $45 (I heard about it from the guy I bought my suby from). That way you can get 5 rentals free and wait until after the season to buy your own stuff. Tri-City always has HUMONGOUS(sp?) sales after the season, usuall between 50-75% off. I got all my stuff (board, bindings, boots, board bag, goggles, pants, jacket and gloves for $550.)
