Yes you can, but only if you buy the right year's coinage. I have a bag full of old nickels and a bunch of pre-1964 dimes for exactly that reason.

"Rosevelt" dimes from 46-64 were made of 90% silver and 10% copper giving them a melt value in today's prices of about $0.35. The mint put a stop to this by giving all of our coins zinc cores which is worth a lot less.

Coincidentally, this allows for some really interesting melt results with pennies. get a candle, pliers, and a penny and start heating that ***** up. The zinc will go molten waaay before the copper loses its tensile strength which makes the pennies look like something from a Salvador Dali painting. ****in' science!

I think if we are in the full financial collapse this guy was planning on that melted coins will probably not be on top of the list of things to worry about.

Not saying it was a good idea, just read about it. The dude had made a killing shorting the market in 2008 and built a literal fortress in the middle of nowhere in Texas

Update: BofA has been hooking us up with uncirculated bills, we had to use a handtruck to get it in my car! I have found lots of interesting notes in the stacks. Got some neat serial numbers one that was all 9's and one that was 87654321 tons of star notes too.
Here is a video of the machine I had to set up to stick glue dots on the notes:

Oh and I wound up doing it because when you open a new account there is some waiting period to make a withdrawal that large. 1% of $70,000=??? Plus they agreed to pay any fees/taxes that I receive so what the hell eh?
