i can't really say i'm surprised to see this on snopes (i actually thought about checking before my first post). reading their debunk of the myth though, there are a few holes -- not that i'm saying the story is true by any means. given the state of today's technology, it's really not as far fetched as snopes makes it out to be. i'd bet ten bucks that people have thought about, and maybe even tried it with less success than the urban myth.
for starters, most NVGs built recently have a built in flash protection system. being designed for the millitary, where big explosions at night and the resulting flashes of light are commonplace, there was a need to protect soldiers from being blinded by a sudden flash of light while wearing the goggles. without such a circut, and third world army could blind the US Army at night using nothing more than mortar launched flares. i can't imagine that car headlights would be any worse than what a soldier could be expected to encounter lightwise on a nighttime battle field. oh, and if you can fly an apache at night while wearing them, maybe it's a bit more plausible than it seems.

The current version of this suit uses an external projector, but they are working on an internal version...I think I have a pic someplace.

Usually I'm impressed with the "Where this myth came from" stuff on the hoax pages, but this one seem pretty vague and sad.
It may very well be a complete hoax, but as to where it came from, I can't buy that.
I could buy people seeing Cannonball Run and then going out and trying something like this, but that would be proof that stuff like this does happen.
I have friends that have NVG/S and have driven without any extra lighting, and with an IR spot, so I know folks have experimented with it.
Maybe we should ask a CHP next time someone gets pulled over. Heh.
One thing is for sure, I can drive at night with no lights at more than 35mph and not hit anything, certainly even get out of the driveway, so that last paragraph just seems really stupid.
Guess what happens when you are flying at a deer and you don't have your lights on? They bolt, cause they can see you.
I certainly don't recommend turning off your lights to avoid deer though.
