Would This Car Make a Good Commuter?

http://www.autotrader.com/findacar/v...or=&cardist=24

Its a Maxima with about 82K miles on it, how reliable are they? I know a guy who has one with 280K miles on it and he said it runs great, it will be driven it from Lafayette to Vacaville 6 days a week ~ 60 miles a day...I prefer to have a V6 and a Manual tranny would be nice since traffic will be on the other side...I also thought about an Acura Legend...between the 2 which one do you guys prefer and why? Other suggestions welcomed as well, My range would be under $8K and I dont want anything thats too old...

Thanks,
Zoeb

Modded WRX+commute=$$$$$ for gas.

The 3.0 liter Nissan V6 is nearly bulletproof. They only replaced it because the 3.5 is so damn good. It could get you 30 mpg for anohther 5 years if you keep your speeds down, 25 if you don't. Not a lot of maintenance needed, and they have a nice ride. That's also a good price for a 4 year old $23,000 car. An SE is $26,000 now.

I'd try to pick up a VW diesel. Can't beat a diesel for mpg.

Yes you can. Corollas and Civics get the same mileage, and they cost less to begin with.

Newsflash!

Don't get the Maxima. The AT in that particular car is notorious for going out at just over 100K. Besides that tranny, they are really nice, made in Japan cars.

My friend just ditched his because his tranny failed twice, and the dealer mech told him that it is a real problem with those Maximas.

I hope that I just saved you thousands in repair bills!

Andy

Sorry, I've got to call BS on this one, at least on the Civic part. I owned and commuted in a Civic ('97 Coupe) and it got ~26-29 mpg. Best I ever got with it was 34 mpg, but that was coming down the grade from Truckee. Girlfriend owns a 95 Civic Hatchback and gets ~36mpg on her commute which is mostly freeway.
I know two people with VW TDI's, both Golfs. They both claim mileage in the upper 40's, low 50's. That's double the miles per gallong I got with the Civic. Problem is finding a filling station that sells diesel.

I was basing it on the newer ones, which border on 40 mpg. I had heard 42 for the TDIs. Plus the part about finding diesel, plus the added cost of the TDI upfront. But, there is something cool about having a VW that goes blubblubblubblub.
