You can offer a dog as a gift, but do not buy a dog as a gift.

A dog is not a mothers' day card. A dog is not a bouquet of flowers. A dog is not a lamp. A dog is a living creature. Do not buy a dog as a gift.

Do not buy a dog as a gift.

I'm a little concerned that you mentioned "or other small dogs." Chows are large dogs ranging from 45-75lbs.

I would suggest doing some more research before buying a dog/puppy for yourself or as a gift, but here are some rescue sites that have chows (not norcal specific, but there are some in the bay).

thanks for all the help, the only reason I would want to get a dog "as a gift" is because shes been wanting one for a while. plus shes always looking at ads on the newspaper and all that stuff. But thanks again for all the input.

I look at the vintage cars for sale in the back of Road & Track and want one, doesn't mean I'm ready to maintain one or have the facilities to store it. Like I said, if you want to get her a dog, tell her that in a card, and let her pick out the dog herself.
