I want an MP3 player for the slopes but something that has at least 1 gig and can be banged around a bit, hence no hard drives.

iPod's suck, anyway. The "mini" isn't very mini. It's like half an inch smaller then the normal ones and 1/4 the capacity. Ghey.
I got a Treo 600 and loves every moment of it.
Here are some of the features:
Plays MP3, storage up to 1 gig on an SD card.
Take pictures.
Cell phone
PDA.
Here is their latest product, the Treo 650.

i have the muvo tx FM 512mb version. its a small simple player. it comes with FM dont expect constantly great reception from it indoors. i wish they could expand the folder capability a bit more. as it is now, you can only have files in the root directory and 1 level after. theres also a high-pitched whine whenever the backlight of the LCD goes off but that might be due to my cheap headphones. luckily you can turn off/on the backlight feature.
there are strong rumors that apple is releasing an ipod flash player sometime next year. its supposed to be announced at mac world in january.
