what's a good field for a major? (was: School?)
UCSC Cmp Eng 2003
Now a Senior Software Engineer at Intel Corporation working on Itanium Processors.
Pick what you like, not what makes money. Do a lot of internships to really figure out what you want to do with your major.
Every summer I worked on a different project.
99 Intel graphic chipset
00 Intel PCI bridge chipset
01 Intel CPU synthetic workload
02 Intel CPU performance monitor tool
03 Intel Itanium Processor (Full-time)

You can get a general 4 year degree and get in anywhere with the right contacts... you'll just need to learn some on the job, which you'll do no matter where you go.

If you're going in to IT I would major in CE over CS. CE seems like the better way to go - getting you in to hardware/os/design stuff, where CS will likely put you in a programmers chair. I guess it just depends what you like.
I got into the architecture program at Berkeley and Cal Poly, and also had a hard time deciding on where to go. For me, it wasn't so much which was the "better" school, but which offered a more suitable program for me. So I emailed a lot of architects just to get their opinions on the two schools before I made my decision, and surprisingly I got a lot of responses. I ended up getting my degree from Berkeley because their program was more creative and conceptual. Cal Poly's program is very technical. Afterwards, I decided that I didn't want to become an architect. So I just took the creative things I learned in school and applied it to a different career.
I think it just comes down to what you think your strong points are and what you would enjoy doing.

But i do hope that i will be able to write a good letter and explain my decent but not so great grades.. Still have a year cuss i fawked up my first semester..(This semester added will bring it up to a 3.___.)
Reason is: I have worked 34+ hours a week while attending DVC and its not a ****ty job. I do drawings(autocad, solidworx) for a few multi-million dollar companies including John Muir Hospital. My portfolio is competive with those out of school, and i have been offered 56k a year but would have to drop school which i won't do..
I looked into Transfer credits to Cal Poly.. i just wonder unless i get a 3.5/4.0 is it unrealistic to even transfer? I mean i guess i am a little discouraged as far as school goes..
As far as graphics design.. I can hold my own, I dabble in it now but artisticly i do alright.. Probably not true but i see graphics design being a easier degree than architecture (THIS IS MY OPINION ONLY)
I already know: WebDesign Coding (CSS,JS,HTML)
SolidWorx
AutoCAD
DreamWeaver
3d Studio Max
PhotoShop 7.0
(and the basic crap supporting all this)
Oh yah i am not a slacker when it comes to crap i am not and not a lifer at DVC..

My dad is a professor at Cal Poly and in his department a GPA of less than 4.0 doesn't make the review. Then the applications are screened for experience and community service as well as awards and accomplishment.
I'm not trying to be harsh, but that is one of the hardest schools in Ca to get into.

cal poly has strong architecture, graphic design, comp sci, and engineering depts. i transferred from deanza there for mechanical engineering. the place is great, but a little dead in the summer. they have a TON of great restaurants if you have the money.
with transfers in arch or graphic design, the portfolio goes a long way. one thing to note about subjective majors like architecture and graphic design is that you will have to do a$$ kissing with professors to get the grade. not all professors, but it's not something you can avoid. even when you get out in the 'real world'
i graduated from poly in spring '04 w/ a BSME and most people were making about 50-52k/yr out of college. i hated my first job, but that was because of the boss and not the work itself. i'm on my second job (2nd week!) and i love it so far. pay and benefits are better now too.
good luck with whatever you decide!
