What should I do about my '97 Taurus?

So the thing is worth like, maybe, $1000... At best!

It has rust in the coolant system, and now in some of the metal hard lines that run across the firewall holes are appearing. I've put some rubber hose and a clamp on 2 of them. But now there is a new leak underneath the car somewhere, I think it's the heater core... I'm positive that rust is the cause (from years of negliect from my dad and younger brother...) Now that I've been driving it for a few years, I've done WAY more maintence then they ever did.

But what do I do now? I JUST put in new front pads and rotors!

I think the rusted cooling system is going to sink it, if not now, then in the future for sure. The hardlines are only available from Ford, and they are rather expensive when the car is only worth so little... Even if I change all those out, it could still rust through a radiator or the heater core (which is where I think the current hole is...)

So, turn it in for scrap value and then get a new beater/commuter?

Or

Try to fix this, even if it means a couple thousand dollars of parts and labor?

I think I can get a pretty damn good honda or something for like $3k...

Scrap it and get a better beater/commuter. You're going to need to sink a ton of $$ into this beast to keep it running.

Sell it on CL or scrap it..... and sell me the radiator fan, I need it for my truck

its seriously going to cost you way more to chase a phantom leak than it will to buy a better beater.

Go get a civic hatch and call it good!

Gagan, drive it up. We'll take off the vin's and plates and we can film it going over the Forest Hill Bridge. I've always wanted to do that.

I couldn't find another video of Conan's Ford Taurus SHO segments besides this one on YouTube. Freakin' NBC copyrights. Otherwise I would have posted the video of Brad Pitt peeling out in the SHO in front of Rockefeller Center.

I thought I was the only one with a rusted coolant system. Found out that was happening on my Stanza and flushed the radiator and topped it off with fresh coolant/water. Still driving it but not expecting it to last forever.

As far as your Taurus. I say ditch it and get a different beater. Bought my Stanza in Sept 07 for 750 bucks and still driving it to this day... 258K on the clock. Plenty of beaters out there for a grand or under.

i have a similar situation with a 1992 nissan maxima, only half the cylinders run.

i'm not really sure what to do with it because i would hate to sell it to someone and have it break down the next week. its got 240k and still being used as a dd.

It gets 24mpg!

But yeah, I wish... But I'm not one to buy new cars. This one has been in the family for over 10 years.
