what kind of car for $3-$4K?

My brother is looking to buy a car pretty soon since my old 89' civic hatch died(anyone want it? $5! rolling body!) that he was using.

So, for this price range what would you guys recommend for a guy that goes camping, back packing, biking, surfing, and a LOT of driving.
He is a school teacher right now, just out of college so his budget is low.

Any help is much appreciated.

Can always pick up an older Legacy, 9xish for around 3-4K. Or an older Subaru Impreza L.

Forester...

might be a LITTLE above 4K, but not too much.

Then again, I might be biased. WE just bought a '99 Forester S premium for 4K.

I'd say an older Legacy wagon. You should be able to find a nice Legacy L 92 - 94 for somewhere right around that price range.

My 94 Turbo Legacy wagon was $4300 and does all of those things he likes to do.

even though this is a subaru board, i think an older subaru, like what everyone has been saying, would be perfect. he is the target market after all: outdoors, young, active, low budget, environmentally aware, lefty (perhaps). an inexpensive all wheel drive wagon would be perfect for him. tell him to get a wagon at the least.

**** a subaru, get a bimmer.

like an 89 325i with a rebuilt motor and some minor cosmetic damage which would easily be fixed with about $300

You can get something like that for about $2500, if you are interested you should PM me for details

I am asking $4k or best offer.. It might be too high..but do consider most of the suspension are done, brand new dunlop tires and wheels.. 4pt cusco cage, silvia front end, and TEIN HEs.. not to mention whiteline front and rear swaybars are installed.. All it begs is a SR or RB swap..

Paul is interested.. but im just throwing it out in the air to see what kind of offer I will get..
