Here's the thing..
- FRS goes a short distance and is what we use since everyone will have it on their walkie. Those are typically channels 1-8 (or is it 9? I forget)
- GMRS goes quite a bit longer and only some models have it. They're usually channels 9 and above. You're supposed to get a GMRS license via the FCC to use those bands (I got one.. it's online and easy). No morse code needed.
It's meant for family communication on ranches and the like and a single license works for your entire family. That said, most users of GMRS don't even realize they need a FCC license since manufacturers don't really emphasize it.

I've seen them anywhere from $40 to $100.. these are the ones I have which originally cost about $100 a few years ago, and I see these at Costco for $60.
If you get just a FRS walkie, they're a little cheaper. I personally think the bigger the better for these walkies. Also, keep in mind that these are practically 'line-of-sight' radios.. the signal won't go through a hillside or through a crest very well. GMRS helps, but keep that in mind on the drive
Oh, and by the way, the 6, 12, 25, etc. mile range they advertise for these radios is under ideal conditions.. there's no way you'll get that.. expect about a half-mile max.
Also, look for radios that have two numbers on them -- the master channel and subchannel. We sometimes will use a subchannel to reduce cross-chatter from other FRS radio users.. So something like '5-3' is master channel 5, subchannel 3. although realistically, we won't be near anyone else out where we're going.

With rain in the forecast through Thursday night we could encounter some interesting conditions on some of the roads we're going on. Gotta be on the lookout for slides, rocks in the road, etc.
A few tips for those of you that have never been on a drive like this (most of these you already know but it’s still worth saying):
-Check all car fluids; obvious I know but oh so important when your pushing your car hard (just a few months ago a friend of mine fried his Subaru’s engine because he didn’t check his oil for a long time).
-Bleed your brakes; you’re going to be using those brakes a lot, so even if did a brake bleed a few months ago, do it again. Having a soft or firm pedal will affect your confidence going into these corners.
-Secure or take out all the stuff in your car, things will be flying around if you don’t.
-If you have an adjustable rear sway-bar, don’t put it on the max setting (one i-club drive 4-5 years ago I had my sway-bar at the max, and when I would hit big bumps going around corners things got very scary).
-If you have a passenger that never been on a really fast back road drive before bring Dramamine, (over the 9 or 10 i-club drives I’ve been on, seeing a Subaru pulling to the side of the road to let a girlfriend-wife make an unplanned contribution to the hillside is common).
If anyone else has some tips please share them.

^^another tip: check your tire pressure and make sure you don't have any cuts, nails, screws, wire showing, etc. just the over all shape your tires are in, cause it would suck to get a flat way out there. my 0.02

...don't bother showing up. Your ego will land you in a sheep pasture with an SVX towing you out. Problem is, our SVX is undergoing a complete overhaul and restoration, and won't be available for pasture recovery duties. Our Forester focuses mainly on rolled over vehicles that have gone down embankments.
Sup Yall, I just moved up here with my STI from LA and go SSU. I think I am down to go on this drive; however, If it rains my tires aren't going to do to well. I got Falken Z...whats the best place for snow tires around here?
