if you can get a hold of a mac, iMovie is real user friendly. if pc then, you can use adobe premier

I heard Pinnacle made some decent editing software for the PC. That seems to be the popular alternative to Adobe Premiere (which is expensive if you bought it and a little too complicated for the average user IMO).

Yea, if you were ever on a Mac. iMovie is easy as cake. You just plug in your camera and it just detects when all the scenes in chunks where you paused the recording or stopped. Then it shows all your scenes in one window and you just place them where ever the heck you want.

All of those mentioned so far are more mid-range products, (Final Cut, Premeire, Vegas) there used to be a few entry level programs but Pinnacle has bought them all up (Dazzle etc.)

Pinnacle's Studio 9 is OK but it has some stability issues sometimes and can be really difficult to troubleshoot when it hangs.

Its also pretty limited in effects and editing multiple camera angles, as it does not support multi-channel video.

Studio 9+ provides multi-channel video, Chroma key and some other stuff, so that's probably my next move, but I'm not sure that I'd be quick to reccomend it to anyone else, I'd probably point you towards those other programs.

Pinnacle has several tools that work well dependin on your price range. I love theLiquid edition, studio works fine though. Vegas is decent. Ulead Video studio is very easy to get moving and is fairly powerful. Premier is a bit much for the basic user, it's encoding times are pretty brutal. Roxio videowave is ok if you just want basic functionality. There's always mickeysoft movie maker.

vegas is the best for amature and light pro use for pc.
I have Final Cut for the mac its ok but vegas is better. Imovie is good and easy to use on the mac also.

avid is overprices overkill in 99% of cases. premier sux donkey bawls.

edgar,
If you have XP SP2 you might try Microsoft Windows Movie Maker 2.1 since you already have it. (XP comes with a previous version - SP2 updates it). Supposedly fairly easy to use and while limited, is free. A place to start till you figure out what you need.
