thats because you had it setup by comcast.

My Aunt has had comcast tv for awhile. She is very ill but trying to keep her job. So.........comcast app. was 2 weeks out, or you have the option of picking up the install kit. This software was required for setting a comcast username and account and email address , and I believe to get it running. You couldn't just hook up the modem and go.

It's not my first time using comcast, I too have never installed any software from them until this point, but I've also had them come out and set it up.

wonder if they got some local ad bs or something

yea I have hijackthis already installed. I'll try the avira.

going to have to get myself real anti virus, im not worried about getting it fixed, that won't be an issue.....................just alarmed at the way it happened.

turn off system restore, boot into safe mode, run malwarebytes quick scan (update if it has already been installed b4). That should get rid of it unless its Vundo.H.

As ryball said, just use AVG Free off downloads.com

I came to my aunts and installed her comcast, installing the crappy comcast software as I had to make her a username etc.. blah blah

directly after i've been littered with pop ups, an actual virus that will not let me open task manager, control panel, or this free virus software I have.

of course I haven't dl'ed anything else or changed anything that would cause this.

My question is does anyone know if there little software packs are area specific?? I'm almost certain whatever came off their cd opened me up to this. I was wondering if since I'm out of state there is some shady business going on.

***in bull**** eh?

If not I'm ready to make a big stink about it.
Comcast is a giant. This has nothing to do with local ad support. There is no "shady business going on" as you put it. It is standard practice for most software bundles nowadays to include bloatware and/or hidden components. The self-install kit is the worst possible way to setup and sign up for comcast's high-speed internet service. I mean this in two ways: the kit itself has garbage software (which you know now), and it also places the responsibility for ANY technical issues solely on your shoulders. Your modem stops working? You pay for a new one. Your service is down and you call and call, but they say it is fine here and there are no reports of service outage? You pay the Comcast technician to come say 'ello.

Now, on the flip side, if you wait for an available appointment, everything is gratis. Broken modem? New one for free. Service issues? Free technician visits galore. Need Cat-5 or Cat-6 cable? Free from the local C.O. if you're a subscriber. Comcast offers the fastest service that the majority of consumers can subscribe to for home/business use. I use the word majority simply because some people do live in areas offering direct fiber services. I won't switch providers because I personally like having an ISP that provides me a 50+Mbps downstream and 10Mbps upstream connection.

As far as your computer's present state of health, it is not going to be possible for any of us (who are in IT) to evaluate your system without a detailed and time consuming process of "back and forth" with you providing screens, scans, log files, etc. It would be far easier for you to contact someone you know who is a technician or in an IT field that deals with software maintenance, and allow them to remote desktop your system and take a look. I wish you luck though, and I hope you can simply resolve the problem yourself, considering that it is quite a good feeling to have done so.

P.S. NOD32 is far superior if you want AV software. There is a reason Microsoft use/d it themselves for server security.
