OK... my gf and i were riding around in here 97 geo metro (got to keep the miles low on the wrx) when all of the sudden the exhaust snapped between the headers and the cat.
I knew what the problem was right when the car sounded like a briggs and straton engine on steroids.
The car is from the eastcoat which means they salt the roads there which led to the the corosion of the exhaust.
questions: 1)will the 100,000mile warrany cover this (the car has 85000) or is it normal wear?
2)how much will it cost
3) should i goto the dealer or should i go elsewhere.
BTW i live in the elk grove sacto area.
thanks, i need to do this tomorrow so your input is needed tonight!!!!

aint rust protection almost as long as drivetrain warranty (which is longer than the standard bumper to bumper...)
so if i were you, bring it to a dealer.
if the dealer wont warranty it, then bring to a muffler/welding shop.
how bad is the separation? can you see it? is there access for a competent welder to put it back together?
usually, if someone has to take something apart just to get to something, that's where the labor is. but if the pipe just crack in 2, then like i said, a competent welder can put it back together.
but if you have to remove the header/exhaust manifold just to weld it... oh boy...

dude, it really should be under warranty.
you could also try calling all the local muffler shops to see who's the least busy. (which should be all of them because the economy is in the pooper)

dude I hate to sound like a snob, but set that car on fire and take the bus home....call ins., tell them it caught fire while you were driving...those cars will really fall apart around 80-100k miles (I used to drive beater metros for a pizza delivery job in H.S.)
You will obviously need to contact a Chevy dealer to determine whether the warranty will cover it.
My preliminary research tells me that the 100,000 mile rust warranty is only for the body panels, but I hope I'm wrong!

My daughter also has a 97 Geo Metro LSi (3-dr HB) and the same thing happened to her vehicle a few months ago. We bought it used (32000 miles, previous daily rental) and she now has close to 98000 miles. My personal mechanic had it welded and then reinstalled it. Car is running fine but was told that the weld might not hold up and suggested that we look for a replacement part. I've submitted my request to online junkyards and got a variety of prices from $150 on up. Dealer cost was $517 for an exhaust manifold. Weld is still holding for now. "Q"

Get this... my GF takes it to elk grove chevy without telling me so they can look at it and they charge her $100 just to look at it and give her another quote or $550.
so she calls me on her cell all disapointed and i rush over their from work and give the dealers my .02. i said how dare they take advantage of people and i refused to pay. all they did was pull it into the garage and pop their head underneath to look at the cat.
i saved my money and went to one of the redneck garages. the mechanic looks for a split second and said i'll weld the whole thing with new pipe for $100.

According to my research, the only 100,000 mile rust warranty for Metros is pertinent only to their galvanized body panels, not the exhaust system.
Typically exhaust/emissions warranties don't go for that long, either, especially if it was sold in a state other than Cali.
my .02,
David
