Question UC Santa Cruz???

I'm mostlikely going to ucsc in the fall of 07 and was wondering if anyone knew anything about the Econ program.
i heard its a hippie(pothead central) school and a lot of my friends talk about it being ranked near bottom of the UC's. they tell me to just go to Davis but i dunt want to live in cow town.
If anyone can tell me about chances of scoring a good job after majoring in econ from ucsc or getting into a reputable grad school after, it wud help a lot. thanks.
any personal ucsc experiences wud be appreciate good or bad ones..

Haven't they also gotten rid of the letter grade system at UCSC? I hear there are or will be class evaluations instead.

If you got into Davis go to Davis. It is a much nicer school and they have just built plenty of new facilities. There are some things to do in Davis but it is so close to Sacramento that you can always go out there. But best idea is to go to both schools and check them out.

yeah davis has a great econ program. and its not "cow town" as ppl like to call it. you wont even see cows unless you go and look for them. yes its quiet, but its a great environment, and if you look you'll find your type of ppl to do your type of thing. its all really what you make it. im glad i went there.

I will probably be going to UCSC for an econ major as well. I want to go there so I don't have to move.

UCSC got rid of most letter grades in the 70's and 80's, but now I think 90% of classes have letter grades.

I'm going to UCSC right now, although I'm an electrical engineering major. Umm they reinstated letter grades a few years back? Probably like 6 or so... its been letter grades since I've been here. I haven't taken any classes that weren't letter grade, well you can take classes pass/fail too. On top of the letter grade you'll also recieve an eval which most of the time is pointless.

Theres a lot of people that smoke, if thats your thing I think its pretty accesible here. I don't smoke so it doesnt really bother me any. There are quite a few hippies here but its not that bad. Just dont go to the super hippie colleges.

I have a lot of friends majoring in BME (I think...) here. My housemate now is graduating this year and already has a job with Ernest and Young (sp?) lined up. And my friends graduating next year have internships with Ernest and Young and Deloitte (sp?). He says UCSC and Santa Clara have the two best accounting programs here in the southbay but I have no idea. The big four accounting firms comes here and recruits every year. I think they also have a program that gets you your BA and masters in 5 years? Again I'm not totally sure since i'm EE

There are a lot of new facilities here too. They finished the new engineering/econ (they get a floor) building last year I think. They are putting the finishing touches on the physical sciences building. A few of the colleges got new apartments. The new communications/social sciences (I think) buildings are getting close to being completed. And they are planning a lot more (although its pissing the people off), since we have so much open space. They are going to be building two more new colleges soon too.

Now is definatly the time to come visit. Its been nice and sunny but not blazing hot. Its a great change from the rain we've been getting.

Anyhow... I have an essay due for my dumb philsophy ethics class.... so if you have more questions send me a pm or something.

There are a lot of subaru owners that goto UCSC. I think Joel (I forget his sn) is actually an econ major here. Maybe he'll chime in and give you a better idea of the econ program.

Davis is good. Location isn't too bad.

Being from santa cruz I'll say it's a much nicer location.

The school is good. If you pull good grades I don't think you'll have any issues doing the grad thing. Yes there are hippies, pot heads everywhere. yes there are TONS of very left wing democrats and what not.

But the school is good and the location is killer. parking situation is crappy.

if you come out this way keep me posted. there are a few of us out here in the santa cruz area.

Ok I am chiming in. I am a BME (Business management econ) student at UCSC. It is as was stated above one of the top schools that get recruited by the big 4 accounting firms and Grant Thornton (mid sized firm) and many other bay area firms. The econ department was rated recently very high on the national level. Sounds like you want econ or just did not know that there was a BME major at Santa Cruz but if I may put in my 2 cents the BME pathway is the way to go. Makes a more well rounded econ student, because of the requirements. I have plenty of friends who have gotten jobs outside the accounting firms and one of the things all the employers said was that it was the well rounded major that made them so appealing. On a side note that is totally not college related. There are the best driving mountains around the school. Just a bonus.

The university has a very comfortable environment to live in. Maybe too comfortable for some. I majored in Computer Engineering and have been working at Intel since my first year until now. might not be the most/highly recgonized UC. but not bad...

Good luck!

Both of those will be up to you. In terms of a "good" job right out of college, it's going to be dependent on your work experience, what field you go into, etc. In terms of graduate school, that will depend on how well you do academically (GPA), your proficiency in taking standardized tests (GMAT, LSAT, etc.), and the networking you make (for letters of recommendation).

So, don't party too much in school (if you have aspirations of graduate school)... I wish I could go back and change my F in chemistry, freshman year at UCI.
