I don;t think it's "trick" chemistry. It's common sense. The coolant reservoir is like the highest point on the engine. coolant lines into the turbo feeds the turbo coolant and the coolant gets hot and rises (just like hot water and hot air). when the coolant cools down, it drops ala gravity. Goes back into turbo and heats up again. It's this circulation that eventually cools the turbo. I do not think there is a "phase" change, ala coolant into gas and back to liquid. Just hot coolant and not so hot coolant.
That said, the danger w/ turbos running hot and not cooling is that the oil that also lubricate and cools the car may get over heated when the oil pump is off. This causes a "coking" of the oil...ie tar that will gum up the insides of the turbo.
Presumeably, subaru tested the cooling system they have for the TD04 (stock turbo). and found it sufficient. They probably did not test the effectiveness of the cooling system with after-market turbos.
so is a TT necessary on a stock turbo? probably not.
how about an aftermarket one? it's your call.
dan.

If you're located in North San Jose or close to it, I can help you out with your turbo timer. I just did a turbo timer a few days ago for someone else.

For those who didn't do a search here is a link to a temperature study run on a 04 XT. It has been mentioned before but here it is again
