turbo gurus

hello all,

i am looking to get a used td05-16g for my legacy. there's a crack in the v-band clamp area that was TIG welded. if the welding was done well, would it crack or is that always going to be a weakspot?

thanks in advance.

I'd be more worried about the areas AROUND the welds. The weld is probably the strong point now.

Was it welded by a professional or just some guy in his garage?

and a 16g is too small for a legacy if it's newer... 2.5 liter?

2.2 liter closed deck. lucky bastard. Build that sucker up and put a 20g on it.

Still think an 18g would be a better fit. If you only want a 16g I'd get a vf34 or something like that instead. But that's just me. I used to want a 16g to though.

The crack would have need to be channelled as such to stop it from propogating after the weld. Is the piece cast iron? there are certain ways to weld cast iron that have to be adhered to which if not done will see the new weld fail for sure.

I am no welder but if I recall the iron need to be heated prior to the weld then heated and cooled correctly during and after the weld.

That's a cast housing, how did it crack where it cracked?

I would be concerned with the reason why it cracked in that location to begin with and whether the fabricator really understood how to weld cast such as this.

I agree. Only way you're gonna crack there is an accident or a major screw up. You'd have to crank down pretty hard there. For it to crack there before the hardware letloose is another concern.

I wouldn't buy it.

I would guess that the car it was on previously had a major rear end collision with a modified exhaust and bent.
