First, much respect to you for at least being on the right track comparitive to the initiator of this thread.

However, from your list above - you're right. Aside from Masta Ace, almost every MC you listed is new school ('90 - present era) hip hop, so in my eyes you don't know shiet about Hip Hop that can't be read on an internet website. Your list seriously indicates that you're more like a net hopper than anything else, because you must acknowledge & respect history before you claim to know the present.

That's like neglecting your cultural history before your existence. Sorry, but THAT I do NOT respect.

Music is about personal preference. You can on your high horse about whatever you want, but if I don't like the way someone sounds (Busta Rhymes? PLEASE) I could give a **** about their history or what trends they started. You know why tupac is more famous than all those people? Because people like his music better. It may offend your musical sensibilities but who cares? Music is about enjoyment of the listener. MHO

At least another person sees it the same way I do. There are much better MC's out there still alive than either of the two MC's immortalized in this thread.

And thank you LMEK for at least recognizing Kool Keith (Ultramagnetic) as one of them. He gets looked over by just about everyone. He is the originator of so many different style, and never gets credit for it.

Best MC's ever in my book: Rakim, Kool G. Rap, Kool Keith, KRS one, Inspectah Deck, Nas, Canibus and Ras Kass.

Hmm, a Tupac fan from Ann Arbor doesn't "give a ****" about Hip Hop history, and measures the quality of music by its popularity. My point has been validated.

The truth is that rock, blues and jazz were all black created music forms, but would go on to be expropriated by white culture. The origins and history of these music forms would be rewritten or the original creators forgotten.

^^Now you see, this guy is Hip Hop.^^

I don't expect everyone here to understand, let alone agree with what I've written, but it had to be said because this isn't broadcasted on your MTV / BET.

Why you gotta label people like that and try to pick a fight with people? Geezus. You're making it seemed as if I'm boasting about what I know. All I was doing was saying that not all of us, such as myself, just listen to frickin' 2 Pac and Biggie. I'd love to have an intelligent conversation about hip-hop, new school, or old school, which I haven't been too exposed to since I've been more exposed to "new school" than anything since I only started listening to hip-hop in 91 when I was in 5th grade. Instead of putting labels on people, putting them down, people need to make things right through "education" rather than just unless verbal bashing. I get just as upset as you do when some kid goes, "Yea, G-Unit is dope. Who's A Tribe Called Quest?" the same way you're gettin' mad at people for knowing about who Canibus is, but never heard of Whodini. Point me to the right direction then, I'd be more than happy to honestly learn about it if I really don't know where most cats these days probably wouldn't even bother. If more people were aware and there's no beef about who knows what, we wouldn't be having this conversation, now would we?

decided to just make this a new post instead of doing a massive edit on my last post:

BTW, JMT was already listed as "(Vinnie) Paz & Stoupe".
if youve ever met me, you'll know im horrible with names.. i remember vinnie paz, but only when prefixed by vinnie, and el-p.

also company flow. but like someone else said, it shouldnt be about put downs of groups, but it should be "but hey, have you heard this?" if i didnt have friends who listened to such a diverse range of music (xero included from this board), i wouldnt nearly have such a full life. the music i have sets the beat to my life and really accentuates emotions and environments that i have.

which is why im posting this, it'd be cool to hear that one person listened to someone new and said "i liked that" like ive had the chance to tell my friends who told me to listen to a lot of the people listed above.

and this is only one genre... imagine the rest.

I had no idea there was a station that played that stuff. I do miss the Wake Up Show on KMEL though. I used to tape those mixes all the time when I was a kid and listened to them in my little Walkman in my room or whenever I needed to pass the time when I was in day camp, haha. I think the Wake Up Show's back on KMEL. Anyway, thanks for the tip, I'll add it to my presets in my car.

I think that's how hip-hop should be though. No name droppin', beefin', who knows who or what, all that crap. Just letting people expand their horizons, the people who love hip-hop music. If there's some songs you like, pass it along, spread the word, have fun, enjoy the music. No need to keep everyone else in the dark about it, right?

Only if your point is you are a *****. My point is music is for enjoyment. Period. I'll go listen to what makes me happy while you tighten that bunch in your panties.

*golf clap* Wonderful Olmek, but wait... many of the instruments that Guitars and Saxs evolved from were invented by Asian and Persian/Arab cultures... so maybe black artists exploited them. This is rediculous. All Mr. Ann Arnbor was saying is that music is "good" if it makes you happy. He wasn't trying to get into a debate over who deserves credit.

Takumi, you stepped into this with the "yeah I'm a stupid asian" sarcastic remark trying to somehow disprove me, but you actually enforced the point of the lack of knowledge many so-called Hip Hop fans neglect. My harsh style of telling it how I see it is the OLMEK vernacular, so don't take too much offense. If anything, it is my way of waking up a few of you to further learn and explore the origins of what you listen to, be it rock, classical, blues, jazz, country, electronic dance (Kraftwerk), etc etc.

I may be wrong in how I approach the subject, but I'm not changing it because its my stance on what I've seen and experienced. For instance, many believe that diversity through popularization within the Hip Hop culture is a good thing, I believe its done more bad than good over the past 12 years.

Look, if anything.....forgive and/or ignore my bigotry, and read the historical aspects and remember that it isn't just music, it is in fact a culture that is being disrespected, hence my assertion.

Pick up these books at your leisure:

Ruminations - by Knowledge Reigns Supreme over nearly everyONE
Fight the Power (Rap, Race & REALITY) - Carlton Ridenhour aka Chuck D
Yes Yes Y'all - by James Fricke
Hip Hop America - by Nelson George
From Totems to Hip Hop - Ishmael Reed
Short Account of the Destruction of the Indies - Bartolome De la Casas

I never listened to KSJS, but I grew up on 90.1 KZSU Stanford, "The Drum!" Kevy Kev Kool Breeze and Kutmasta Kurt. They schooled the Bay Area for many many years with true underground Hip-Hop. That is how Kutmasta Kurt hooked up with Kool Keith. Since Kevy Kev is from New York, he brought Kool Keith out to the Bay Area and Keith met Kutmasta Kurt at 90.1 studios. I believe Kevy Kev still has his show on Sunday Nights from 6-9pm. The best REAL underground true Hip-Hop station in the Bay Area. 90.1 KZSU Stanford.
