Transmission re-build

Hello i-club,

I have a 2002 WRX and I've been having some troubles with my tranny and was wondering if anyone knows/recommends any shops here in the bay area that can re-build my tranny. Thanks in advance for your help.

If you're looking to rebuild that trans, you may rather look at getting a 6 speed instead.

Why? The 5mt is great if you get the right one and don't drive like a retarded monkey on crack.

OP: Consider finding a JDM transmission on e-bay, you need one from a MY04+ so that it has the wider gears and triple syncros. Toss a set of blast plates on it, and don't try to launch hard or power shift fast, you will be just fine.

I know FW Motorsports offers rebuilds but with legacy gears (?) Don't quote me on that, but if anyone has more info on that feel free to chime in.

Thank you for that consideration, I'll look into that depending on budget.

Yep, nothing wrong with the 5MT IMO. I have a synchro problem in mine too and is going to need a rebuild at some point.

You might consider swapping over to the "band aid" cocktail, it has worked for me (its not a fix however)

2 quarts redline HEAVYweight (the red stuff)
1.8 quarts Motul

The motul is in there to keep the redline from foaming up as it gets hot. Works well, it gave me back some less "crunchy" shifts tell I can find the transmission I am looking for.

TY757VBAAB or if I can luck out big time a TY754VB1CA but that is a dream transmission made of unobtainum.

Define "trouble"? May or may not need a full on rebuild. Putting heavier fluid in my front gearbox and rear diff helped a lot of my issues. It'll still need rebuilding/replacing eventually, but not for a while yet.

3rd-5th gear whines really loud when I accelerate, tranny fluid and rear diff was changed but still has the same problem.

I didn't do the cocktail, but I did refresh with Torco less than a month ago and it does it less, but still does it. Only on 2-3 upshift mainly, sometimes also on downshift even when rev matching. None of the other gears are crunchy.

Shifts fine though? That might not be your trans, might be your diff. Bad news, it costs about the same. When my WRX was whining like that, it was the center diff. Might be worth having a shop diagnose before you drop big funds on one thing and it turns out to be something else.
