There is no way to prove that we each didn't just decide to sell cars for $1.
I put gift when I traded my 91 MR2 for a 92 Miata and the lady at the DMV told me that I still had to put the market value of the car. I put $100 and she said that was fine. I don't remember exactly how much I paid, but it wasn't much at all

You might need to snuggle with your buddy in front of the disgruntled DMV employee to seal the deal.

i think if you sell it for $1 to each other you should be good. for some reason I think $.05 doesnt work. same reason steve jobs salary is $1. something about a whole dollar makes everything better.

This is what i did 2 weeks ago. i traded my 2005 70k miles SALVAGE G35. for a 2003 White Wrx 120k and mods. we have the titles and 2 forms. those are the transfer of title form. we swapped info put down ZERO $ on the title. then transfer paper we put GIFT. later that day went to DMV in gilroy. originally we were at san jose to do the trade but it was crazy busy.. paid $15 for the transfer THATS IT, IT'S DONE!!!
