top speed on specific gear

just wondering if anyone knows what is the max speed you can go under each gear

1st = 30mph?
2nd = 60 mph?
3rd = 90 mph?
4th = 120 mph?
5th = 150 mph?

I Think these are right, if they aren't Im sure someone will rudely point it out. Assuming 7100 RPM Redline

Max
1st - 37
2nd - 65
3rd - 93
4th - 131
5th.....

MPH/1000 RPM
1st - 5.2
2nd - 9.3
3rd - 13.2
4th - 18.5
5th - 24.4

Stock WRX wagon is drag limited to about 145, just shy of 6000 rpm in 5th.

get more hp and you can go faster

lol. hmm... drag limited. does that mean it can't go any faster even with more power?

No, you are drag limited because your car is a block aerodynamically and doesn't have enough power to over come the drag at 145 MPH, add more power and you can go faster. If you cant go faster with more power, then you would be limited by the gearing.

This is why some cars with more closely-spaced gearing than subies can actually attain a higher top speed in 5th gear (with a 6-speed tranny). If the RPM is too low at the expected top speed, the engine won't be producing enough power to overcome drag.

Correct. On paper, my Impala SS (with 6-speed manual tranny swap) would do approx 220 MPH in 6th if I had the HP (would require about 800 HP near as I can figure)

Reality is (and I haven't found a long/abandoned/straight enough road to verify), top speed is probably around 145 or so. I am at the very top of 5th at that speed, and 6th would only be 3500 RPM.....not enough to sustain at that speed, most likely (it'd be close).

To meet fuel economy standards.
