Top Speed

I was just wondering what kind of top speeds people have hit in their modified WRX's or STi's. On a race track of course I am really curios because I might be running the Silver State Classic in the next year or two.

Maybe others would be interested in doing this and we can get a whole group out there. Read the website, it explains what the race is all about.

Mine is a stock 2003 WRX and i've got it up to 133 mph on the HWY while racing a 350z. We were catching up to traffic and needed to slow down.

I did that a time or two (check results on Nevada Open Road challenge in '99, 110 target speed).

In your car you can go fast enough that they'd require a roll cage for a stock WRX, that is- if you want to do a serious top speed effort on their course.

I expect about the top speed you could sustain over 90 miles with hills and turns is probably going to be in the 120-125 range.

but it comes down like this, how fast you want to average, and what max speed they will allow is entirely determined by your safety equipment

"Touring Class"
Stock vehicle with factory belts, Helmet, gloves and shoes; top average 110, top speed 124

"Grand Touring"
Stock vehicle with 5 or 6-point harness', Helmet, gloves and shoes; top average 125, top speed 140

"Grand Sport"
5 or 6-point harness', Competition approved roll bar, Helmet, helmet support, fire suit, gloves and shoes; competition license... top average 150, top speed 165,

"Super Sport"
5 or 6-point harness', Competition approved roll cage, Helmet, helmet support, Arm restraints, fire suit, gloves and shoes, collapsable steering column, and more... 160 and 170 MPH average target!

"Unlimited" requires pretty much a purpose built race car with full cage all of the restraints and safety gear you can imagine and it requires that you've run succesfully at a speed of 165 in a previous event.

Overall top speed record was set in May of 2000,

207 mph average over 90 miles.

Average speed accuracy, only one car has since done better than Dave and I did in '99-

Jim Martz in May of '01 at 125 mph, was also off by .0002 mph, but at 125 that is just a millisecond or two better.

(I don't count the 110.000 given DB Tanner in May of '02, they give a time error of .008 sec, where we were at .005)

These events are a whole lot of fun, not real cheap, but definetly worth doing a time or two if you like going fast.

Winning them is pretty damn hard though.

Yeah all I have for now is a Snell approved helmet and nomex gloves and a collar. I used to have a nomex suit when I road raced a mustang I had but sold it with the car. I almost forgot about the safety regulations...thanks for the info/reminder!

Don't forget your tires either, they require both speed rating and load rating to meet or exceed that of the factory spec. tires.

Mine went a little past 140 and I let off when it was stock...It didn't feel like it had much more though. But now that I have a VF34 and supporting mods it should be quite a bit higher I hope....

I would probably run road race tires. The only accidents I have heard of during these events where due to tire failure.

Be careful about that, in fact, a lot of race tires are NOT rated for these kinds of speeds, I would strongly advise that you check with the events tire tech before investing in tires for these events.

You are correct about tires usually being the culprit in wrecks, although there have been a few driver error induced disasters (my friend Larry Hall balled up his BMW 850 this spring at about 130) and there are usually a couple of engine failures and sometimes fires as well.

Tire failures on these events can be, but only rarely are caused by punctures from debris, the real killer is heat, just a few pounds low in pressure at 110+ (not to mention the guys running 150-170+) can cook even a really good tire down to crap very fast, so be sure they are well pumped up before heading out in the morning.
