Top Medal Is Awarded To Honor Sergeant's Bravery
A Man among men...
On a moonlit Afghan ridge in 2007, Staff Sgt. Salvatore Giunta ran alone through a barrage of gunfire to rescue a friend being dragged off by insurgent fighters.
On Friday, the White House said Sgt. Giunta will receive the Medal of Honor for his bravery, making him the first living serviceman from the Iraq or Afghan wars to receive the nation's highest military award...
..."I didn't run through fire to save a buddy—I ran through fire to see what was going on with him and maybe we could hide behind the same rock and shoot together," Sgt. Giunta said in the book. "I didn't run through fire to do anything heroic or brave; I did what I believe anyone would have done."

Negative...He "only" received the Navy Cross for his actions during Operation Red Wings.
In a nutshell, he voted to let some goat herders escape instead of killing them. These herders then dropped a dime on the SEaL's location.
Luttrell later commented about his decision:
""It was the stupidest, most southern-fried, lame brained decision I ever made in my life. I must have been out of my mind. I had actually cast a vote which I knew could sign our death warrant. I’d turned into a f--ing liberal, a half-assed, no-logic nitwit, all heart, no brain, and the judgment of a jackrabbit."

It never ceases to amaze me how humble and honest Medal of Honor winners are. It's always something like "I was just doing my job".
I think it's because people who see combat realize how lucky they are to stay alive, and how many of their fellow soldiers deserved the medal just as much as they did.
Also sad that the medic died - being a medic, he must have known he was dead after being shot through the upper leg, and he would have been of clear mind while he bled out frantically trying to stop the bleeding...
Bleeding out (something that would be relatively trivial in an operating room environment) is such a crappy way to die.

I hope he's not paraded around as the brass pats itself on the back. i know it happened to John Levitow had to turn his back on the air force after he got out, tired of the way he was treated.

Amazing detail on those bronze statues. Those are 2 of Marcus Luttrell's teammates. One died in the firefight on that mountain, the other was on board the Chinook that was shot down while attempting to rescue the 4 SEALs.
