.45acp ammo isn't that expensive. Try shooting a .357sig or 10mm. Not cheap.

Nice gun Chris. I have a 1911 with an accurized barrel that my grandfather had set up for target competition. It is a blast to shoot and is more accurate than anything else I own (of course it could be that the holes in the paper are so big, it just *looks* like I'm closer to the X than with other guns ).

you should be able to "use" it.

how old are you? some ranges dont allow anyone under 18 to shoot a handgun.

LOL. 1911 aint exactly the best varmint hunting tool. You might want a .22cal rifle for that instead.

Nice Choice Chris. If you go to www.brownells.com , you can get all types of magazines for the 1911 pistol, as well as other parts.

For my 1911s, I usually use the Wilson 8 rnd mags. I never had a misfeed with them . These are the same mags that I used when I worked for R.P.D.

As far as capacity goes...the 1911 7-9 rnds in the mag is fine as long as you carry spare magazines. The advantage is that they print less when carried concealed versus the high capacity .45 autos.

If you need some tuning work on your new toy, I can help.

Thanks for the offer. I found out that the pistol ships with a coupon allowing me to purchase as many 7 round SA mags I want for $9 each within the first 90 days after purchase. So I think I'm going to buy 5-6 of those and maybe 1-2 Wilson 8 rounders to see how I like them.

Two quick questions for you 1911 guys on here that I'm too embarrassed to ask the guys over at the 1911 forums.

First, what is the benefit of the Beavertail type grip safety? The Mil-Spec I purchased has the traditional type, wheras the 'Loaded' upgrade, and all other models by SA for that matter, ship with the Beavertail. Why is that?

Second, what is the benefit of upgrading the barrel 'bushing?'

Thanks fellas.

CHris,

The standard grip safety works fine if your hand doesn't have much meat between the base of your thumb and the base of your trigger finger. Also, if you don't use the modern high grip techniques.

In my hands the standard G.I. grip safety usually gives me hammer bite. Since, I shoot with a very high grip on my 1911. This lessens the torqing effects / muzzle flip, thus providing me with superior recoil control in rapid fire (and hitting the 10 ring at 25 meters).

In the long run, if you have a beavertail grip safety on a 1911, you can get a higher grip, it distributes the pistols recoil energy over a wider surface and thus it is more comfortable to shoot for long strings of fire.

If you don't like the look of the beavertail grip safety, then you can get a commander hammer with a mating G.I. commander grip safety or if you are on a budget, the standard hammer spur can be trimmed and de-horned.

As far as the upgraded barrel bushings: They help promote more accuracy if properly fitted. If I was going to replace that on a brand new 1911, I would spend a little more and get a Bar-Sto barrel or Kart barrel with a mated bushing with it.

I'm guessing the that your 1911 will shoot 3 inches or less with the loads it likes at 25 yards, if you do your part.

Maybe we can set up a range meet some time?

Awesome reply man, thanks! You answered both of my questions very well. I have a feeling that the same question by me over at the 1911 forums would elicit a 'search you n00b', which I had already done and that provided me with too much difficult to understand info. I'm totally down for a range meet. I-Club had one a while back, I believe, but it was pistol only and I only had a rifle to use at the time. The next one should be at an outdoor range (maybe Chabot?) so that we can shoot anything. Once the holidays are over and my work settles down, you and I should put our heads together and plan one.

Nice gun!

I bought this when cars started getting stolen at my marina (which should have clued me in to moving my Acura instead of letting it get stolen as well) and have been itching to shoot it ever since:

I think there's an outdoor range over at Coyote Point on the peninsula, but I'm not sure if it's only for the Police folks. I know they also have a dedicated range on the back side of SFO, so it wouldn't make sense to have to LE-only ranges so close...

I'd be willing to do a range date as well

...you can buy high-capacity magazines in Nevada. Of course it's illegal to import them into California, but it's legal to buy them in Nevada...
