Timing or similar issue, need some help please

2006 wrx, I'm running a blouch 16g, STI TMIC, walbro fuel pump and stock injectors. I got my tune from dynocomp in Scottsdale, AZ.

About a month after my tune and turbo/tmic upgrade my car started to pull timing or something on a long drive from AZ to San Diego. Going over a bridge on the freeway the car just suddenly felt sluggish and my boost was capped at 9-10psi. I kept driving and the problem just went away a few miles later. Car was running fine for about a month and then the same thing happened again. I called my tuner and his only thought was maybe bad gas so I ran some 101 race gas for a tank and again the car was fine for a month but the problem seems to just keep coming back every once in awhile.

Lately though I've had some weird lag shifting from 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th while WOT. The car will hold boost pretty good through 6500-7000 rpms but when I shift it feels like my boost doesn't pick back up, then the rpms drop a lot while there is the delay and then WAM boost is back and the car kinda has a slight clunk/jerk before starting to accelerate again in the next gear.

I've tried calling and emailing the guy who tuned it but he never gets back to me. Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction!

It sounds like the tune is dropping the advance multiplier enough to drop to wastegate boost levels. This happens when the ECU senses a lot of knock throughout the RPM range. This can happen because of tuning issues or possibly a leak or other mechanical issue throwing off the tune. Give us a call if you'd like us to look into it for your and diagnose the issue.

Thanks

What were you tuned for, 91 or 93 octane?

It's actually my brothers car, he was tuned in Arizona on 91 octane and now he is up in Seattle, WA. He logged the car earlier this morning so I'll put up the numbers soon.

Here is the data log, DAM is at 0.06 and from what I've learned that means the car is not very happy. Thanks for any help or advice!

I apologize for the link, not sure how to post it directly to the thread.

Yep that ECU is definitely not happy at all. It looks like it recorded a lot of knock at low load/RPM I would look for things that might be loose and/or tapping making noise that could throw off the knock sensor.

Thanks for the info Ed. Could we rule out the possibility of a defective or improperly installed fuel pump?

How dare you question my fuel pump installation skills! I had it tuned right after I put it in and the tuner said everything was good with the instal.

The guy from dynocomp wrote me back with a one sentence response saying I probably have a bad knock sensor. If I can't find anything loose or banging around in the engine bay should I just replace the sensor? Or could there be an underlying problem with the tune or elsewhere?

He could be right.

I'd get it in to a local tuner if you plan on driving it around. Get them to diagnose the issue. Could be the knock sensor. Could be something much worse. One thing is for sure... the more you drive it around the more you increase your chances of catastrophic failure.
