Timing Belt install. Any help?
I have tried to put it off due to my recent loss of employment and forking out $1200 to a shop is just not on the books right now
So, im looking to see if anyone on i-club has some expierence on installing timingbelts, idlers, waterpump, ect and is willing to lend a day to giving me a hand.
Any help would be much appreciated, and you will be payed! Just not $1200 bucks..
Money AND beer will be provided UP FRONT! (we dont need a thread about Volkey
)

I have never done a timing belt in a Subaru before but I will hang out and tell you that you are doing it wrong while drinking beer!

I bought all the parts for about $400 (water pump, idlers, tensioner, belts, thermo) and followed this.
Meatys Timing Belt Changing Guide - NASIOC
If you have changed a timing belt on ANY car, this shouldn't be too bad. Its just not as easy and fast to do as a Honda.

That's still dealership pricing, not independent shop. For example, off the memory, Andrewtech does it for just under $400 including the price of the belt and the pump. Anything else is additional parts costs.

$1100-$1200 is about right for using all dealership parts.
That being said, we now offer the service for $849 OTD using the Gates Racing timing belt kits which includes the belt, water pump, idlers, and tensioner.
Thanks

I too was quoted around $1000-$1200 when calling around independent shops and race shops and decided to just do it myself.

I spent more than that on just parts at a 20% discount.
$1200 is very expensive and yes... dealership prices but most reputable shops aren't going to be all that far off. Take for example LIC. Last time I checked they were at $900 but they do EVERYTHING. Which is a good idea.
I spent about $600 doing it with my buddy and damn near lost my motor because I misadjusted a guide. Thanks to GST for saving my *** on that one.
So if you're going to do it yourself be damn sure you set the timing up perfect and do not touch any of the corner guides. Leave them tight.
If you're going to a shop... expect to pay $8-1000. I wouldn't pay $1200 either. But doing it all over again I would probably pay $8-900 to do it.

You have to replace the idlers and tensioner when doing a 105k. I've never seen them come out in good shape and I HAVE seen people skip them and then have a disaster on their hands soon after. I don't see any way the shop could replace all the necessary parts and do the labor for $400.

My thought was just to fork out the $345 bucks for the complete gates kit, and either call up some shops and see what they will charge me for just the labor to do the service, or see if anyone here has a little know-how, can lend a hand, and i can just slide you a few hundred and some beer.
$1000 is about average for what speed shops will charge you to do the service, atleast the ones I have called. Money is tight right now and i just dont have that.
