245/40 is potentially going to be closer to stock. Tire Size Calculator [tiresizr.com]
235/40 is tall? not really.
i had to wait 2-3 months for my RS3's. ran 235/40 star specs and am now on 245/40 rs3s. i ax'd the star specs and they were awesome, but haven't pushed the rs3s. too early to report on treadwear.

I've had several sets of 235/40's. They look tall for sure. 245/40 look like monster tires.

and i actually don't know what the OP is running, but i should've referenced that i'm talking about 235/40/17s and 245/40/17s

That would make perfect sense.

Ya, 245/40/17 is a great size. I ran it once with sumitomo htrz III+. For $99 a tire I was very impressed.
245/40/18 is gi-normous.

i have continental dw's sidewall is a bit soft but they have great tread wear and handle great all around though. in the wet especially but the hankook v12's are the best bet they are not expensive at all and they handle great for that price.

I'll vote for Federal 595's for budget tires. They can be found super cheap, especially if you pick a popular size. The tread is a little taller than usual so they can be a little bit squirrely when new but they just get better as they wear.

You understand that the second number in 245/40 is not actual mm, but a percentage of the treadwidth, right? That is why a 225/45, a 245/40, and a 265/35 are all about the same height

i recently went with Sumitomo HTR Z III's. they had great reviews on tirerack. Quieter and grippier than my previous bfg g-force sports. big-o tires actually matched the price on them so i got them installed there and saved on shipping.
My favorite budget tire to date was the Dunlop DZ101. I ran 235/40/18 for 35k miles with no issues. I think I paid 650 for the set, and I'd imagine the 17" diameter ones would be even cheaper. They felt better at their limit than any similarly priced hankook or kumho tires I've used in the past.

Another vote here for the Dunlop DZ101. I am on the my second set and like the fact I can get about 30k miles out of them. They offer good performance for the money.

I got under my car yesterday to tighten my front sway bar mounts and noticed I am in dire need of some tires as well. The inside of my tires are completely bald from the negative camber set up I have on my car. I have a set of winter rims and tires, so I don't need all seasons.
Any suggestion on some super high performance tires with low wear ratings that are affordable?
Here's the tires I am not interested in.
Sumitomo HRT Z III - had them and hated them
KDW's - Soft sidewall that bends around corners
Hook a brother up with suggestions. This is for my 03 WRX.

^ Like I've posted earlier, a great tire that's affordable is the Hankook Ventus R-S3. It does have a tread wear of 140 though
. Another affordable tire that grips pretty well and it affordable is the Hankook Ventus V12. They're not as sticky as the R-S3, but they will last a lot longer.
