i like my 512s (got them from online tires), they are 16s so it feels spongy but thats with almost all 16s...kumho ast are cheap and they have long tread life - they are all season too if thats needed...
suprisingly ebay has pretty decent tires...theres also directbuytire.com which has a warehouse in alameda where you can pick the tires up for cheaper than shipping
ive found that if you type in the make and size, google shopping usually finds the lowest prices

They're really predictable tires, you don't suddenly lose traction, you'll feel it. Car and Driver rated the as #2 with #1 being the star specs.

I got my tires + alignment on stock wheel size(205/55/16) at auto innovations down in milpitas for $460. Oh and Hankook was offering a $60 mail in rebate if you purchase 4 v12's. I just got an email notification yesterday that my rebate was received and processed, and that my $60 should be coming to me shortly. $460-60=$400
bottom line: $400 for brand new tires & alignment!

235/40 is tall. 245/35 is hard to find and limited to fairly pricey options i.e. Hankook v12's for around $600 or Federal ss595 RS-R's which are gonna be really harsh. Khumo and hankook are good brands though.
I'm actually going to be picking up a set of nankangs this week. $400 for a set of 255/35's mounted and balanced. Good threadwear which makes them good since I just need something cheap to cover long distances at cruising speeds only. But they have received good reviews as good budget tires.

I can personally vouch for those, I have them on my car right now, really grippy for the price you pay for them, they're basically like a step below the star specs. It's got a little bit of a softer sidewall, which I think is better for daily driving as it makes for less of a harsh ride. That's subjective though.

245/40 is potentially going to be closer to stock. Tire Size Calculator [tiresizr.com]
235/40 is tall? not really.
i had to wait 2-3 months for my RS3's. ran 235/40 star specs and am now on 245/40 rs3s. i ax'd the star specs and they were awesome, but haven't pushed the rs3s. too early to report on treadwear.
