The throttle cable broke on my suby, WTF?!?

So last night I was driving up Page Mill and was going at a slow pace around 45-50 and I came around the third hairpin on the uphill and let up off the throttle and then got back on it and then pedal went straight to the floor, turns out the throttle cable on my 2002 Subaru Impreza WRX snapped off. Has anybody ever seen or heard of this **** happening before? Would this be covered under warranty? I ended up getting some speaker wire off my friends car and we ghetto rigged a throttle cable up that was good enough to get my car down onto El Camino, but this is pure ****ing garbage, I never thought that I would ever have to replace the throttle cable on my 2 year old car with 40k miles on it.

that is a big bummer but i assume the repair costs won't be as high as for a new transmission many folks have to get after 40k miles. these cars are cheap pieces of HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Replacing the throttle cable isn't hard, you could do it in your driveway with a jack and jackstands. Just make sure you adjust the cable ends so that the throttle butterfly isn't getting any cable tension on it at 0% throttle, and verify 100% travel of the butterfly.

I've had throttle cables snap before, it's not completely unheard of.

Yeah, replacing it is a snap. 30 min most.

Never seen or heard about that happening.

It damn well should be covered under warranty.

Unless you paid for extended, 36,000 was the end of warranty.

If you are lucky thay might still consider this as covered, because;

1) it doesn't cost very much, and
2) 40,000 is really close to 36,000

But I haven't heard of it happening to anyone either, I've got nearly 140,000 miles on my original throttle cable

I bet I can tell you exactly what happened.
You had the throttle down good, let up suddenly(lucky you no throttle lift oversteer), the cable was loose but lacked enough lube to slide quickly, so a loop of cable stayed extended and was able to jump the track, you stomp it pulling the cable tight against the sharp edges of the track and the cable snaps. Why they are so sharp I'll never understand, if anything it would have prevented tons of cuts working on these cars.
This is similar to the cruise cable sticking or jumping its track and binding (what the dealer clip fix prevents) . The cruise cable won't snap as easy since it isn't under wild driver control, so it just sticks.
To prevent, lube your cables every 15K service and put a zip tie around the U shaped track to encourage the cable to stay inside it (kinda like the dealer cruise fix).
