For those in the north, how's Bolinas rd?
I searched and found some of you suggested this road, and it looks nice. I was thinking about driving it after Formula Drift on saturday. Are there a lot of cars? How about cops? I'm not going to push the car too hard, but I don't want any trouble. And I don't want to hit any biker or other cars if it gets crowded. My brother's been there once, and he said it was pretty nice. Thanks.

Well, if you are referring to Fairfax-Bolinas Rd. that goes over the Bolinas ridge, that's my back yard.
I ride my motorcycle on it weekly. It's a beat up, bumpy road with enough turns, switchbacks, to make most people puke. There are a ton of bicyclists on it on the weekends. Not too many cars. Most motorcyclists stay off it, unless they have a dual-sport or motard. I don't recommend cars with coil-overs. Travel is your friend. Try to stay in your lane, and remember there might be a cyclist around the blind corners. I would suggest taking a left at the top of the ridge and driving ridgecrest. That is one the most used sections of roads for car commercials in the world. Bolinas road down the back side of the ridge to Hwy 1 is brutal. It is very narrow, very bumpy and beat up. Hope this helps. I got more info if you need it.

Me, I just start driving and follow the road where ever it takes me.

that roads great... but there's much better out there. That one has far too much traffic and bikes on it.
Are you just looking for a mountain road that has 'drift' capabilities? you might find that that road is too tight and bumpy to do anything correctly. You'ld have better luck out on Skaggs Springs up north. It's much wider and smooth survice, well for the first half anyway.
just be sure to come on my next drive. Then you'll learn a bunch of great roads.

...you can't drift on Skaggs unless you're doing in excess of 80 mph, which is well over the 30/35/40 speed limits throughout that road. The Corp of Engineers built that to be an invitation to speed, and a really nice little hunting ground for cops.

not only that... but i'm a member of a pretty big motorcycle community (BARF) and its VERY common for those guy's to be hauling *** on skaggs, so its really not the best idea to go drifting up skaggs.

There are exceptions to that, I'm sure, but not that many.

whoa whoa whoa.... You make it sound like all bikers are squids who do 12oclock wheelies around blind corners at 130 mph. i hope you know it goes the other way around ten fold... i've seen and hears stories of guy's getting ran off the road because of cagers, as well as cagers who think its smart to do a u turn in the middle of a blind corner. Yes of course their are the exceptions to this as well, for i've also seen squids flying around 9 and 84 and skaggs, but for the VERY most part it is the cager who is unsafe compared to the motoryclist. Lots of motorcycles are extremely safe compared to cagers, and I have to say that i see people in their cages be more dangerous that guy's on bikes. Remember, its VERY hard to hurt someone besides the rider on a motorcycle, especially compared to that of a driver in a car.

look neither road is ideal for drifting. I think the top of Mines out back of hammy is better. Just the first 3 miles or so though.
most of the best once only have short sections where you can do that sort thing.

Thanks guys. What are cagers and squids? Not familiar with the lingo. Anyways, we're not going to be drifting and doing anything stupid, I think "spirited driving" is the term. We're probably get the tires screeching a bit but no loss of traction, we're not close to being experienced enough to attempt it. Anyways, thanks for all the info and help, we'll definitely look out for motocyclist and other cars and the police. I'd love to drive Mt hammy but that's kinda far. I'm looking foward to this weekend, we'll be there around 9 am to hit the roads and off to Formula Drift. I think my friends and I should go at like 7am.
Fairfax-Bolinas is pretty awesome right up until you cross the Alpine Dam. The epic set of switchbacks up the side of Mt. Tamalpais after the dam can get a little tiring. +1 on turning onto Ridgecrest and not going down the other side of Tamalpais.
I had a truly powerful driving moment heading up Bolinas road through thick fog then breaking through the clouds right as I turned onto Ridgecrest. It was a beautiful sunset, with a solid layer of white clouds about 200ft down the hill on either side of the road. Felt like I was on top of the world. Been back up there many times since, never seen it again.
