You want to talk about artery clogging? The pizza joint down the street from where I grew up in Philly had a Gina-cotti. It was basically a pizza that is deep-fried. They take the dough, form a bag, fill it with cheese and sauce and whatever else you want in it, roll the top to close it up and then deep fry. So awesome!!!! There is a reason why Philadelphia was/is listed as the fattest city in America for years straight.

The closest you can get to an authentic Cheesesteak out here.

The most authentic place I've been to in California is Philly's Best where the first chain store was put up in Fountain Valley in Orange County. We met the owner when they first opened and found out he was from the same area we were from in Philly. He imports the meats, the rolls, Wise potato chips, Frank's sodas and one time we went he even had Yuengling beer there. There are other locations now as well, but not up here in Nor Cal.

oh god help me I did it AGAIN!! hey JZ you should come check this out with us since youre a block away. And they have the cutest girls working there!

After looking at the website and seeing a couple pictures, I'm not convinced. While I'm not doubting they are good. But part of what makes the cheesesteak so good is the Amoroso rolls. All these CA joints use sourdough rolls or some french bread type roll, it's not the same. The CheeseSteak Shop is the only place to use the rolls and you can even buy a pack of them to bring home with you.

My GF and I have been going to Jersey Joe's for a while now, and we love it. Although the "traditional" may be with Cheese Whiz, we like ours with onions & hot peppers (she also like mushrooms, while I prefer mild peppers). Anyways, we've tried a number of Bay Area cheese steaks, and still think Jersey Joe's is the best (granted, we have not tried the Philly Cheesesteak Shop). Last Christmas, we even went to Philly to get an authentic Cheesesteak from Gino's (she's from NJ, so we were there visiting her family - flying 2700mi just for a sandwich would be crazy). It was ok, but we still liked the ones from Jersey Joe's better. I also had a cheesesteak at some shopping center in Philly (right by all the Ben Franklin stuff) and even liked that cheesesteak better than the one from Gino's.
The mom and pop cheesesteak shops that are all over Phlly are always way better than all the tourist spots. Geno's and Pat's are for the tourists. And Cheese Wiz is about 50/50 with the locals. Some love it, some hate it. I hate it on my cheesesteak, I prefer white American Cheese. And you probably went to Franklin Mills, huge *** mall. Used to go there a lot when we lived there, they used to have a bowling alley and laser tag set up in there. If you find yourself back in Jersey, southern especially, check out Lee's Hoagie's. Great hoagie's and good cheesesteaks too.
