85 MPH Speed Limit Approved In Texas

"The state of Texas has approved a new 85 mph speed limit on certain roads that still need to be passed by the Department of Transportation, but motorists who drive at night are still stuck at 65.

Speed limits in the United States are set by each state or territory, and some vary according to many factors, including the laws in each state, the type of road, land use, and more.

Texas is one of two states that already had the highest speed limit on some open highways of 80 mph. The second being Utah. The new speed limit will be the highest in the country.

Although the measure was passed yesterday it may be some time before motorists are allowed to drive it. That’s because the Texas Department of Transportation still has to decide what roads to post the new limits on. Prospective roadways must pass safety and structural integrity tests.

The speed limits are only allowed during daytime driving. The lower, safer 65 mph will remain. Trucks will also see their limit restrictions removed with the new measure.

In addition, Texas highways that have a maximum speed limit of 70 mph will be increased to 75 mph. It is almost certain that most rural roads will be approved with the faster 85 miles per hour signs."


I'd love to see faster speed limits in California, but it will probably never happen (at least not in the Bay Area).

Which means everyone will still do 95 where it is 85, just like Cali. Not like 99% of anyone does the speed limit here unless there is a cop visible.

SF is trying to pass the 15MPH in a School zone deal, and now that SJ heard that they are proposing the same thing.

Here is the map showing the restricted and unrestricted stretches on the autobahn system. 70% (according to ADAC) is unrestricted.

I don't know how current that map is, but I don't recall there being that much unlimited. I was there less than a year ago, too. 120/130kph was very common. You know it's time to let it rip when you pass a gray sign with hash marks through it.


I believe the total unrestricted distance is actually in the 40% range.

Another thing... it was actually pretty hard to top out the rental car due to not quite having enough room. I managed it finally while going from Stuttgard to the Bodensee.

Thank goodness, that strip of Hwy 10 between El Paso and San Antonio is mind nubmingly long and boring...

The night time speed limit on that freeway is a killer! My buddy got a ticket at a speed trap during his shift to drive that part of our road trip. After that, he had to drive 65mph the rest of the way for 5 hours...

 

Tips on rental cars there? I'm planning on renting one for a trip from Frankfurt to Munich.

Rentals aren't cheap. The 318 I had was much better than the A-class I almost got stuck with. It was perfect, really as we did three countries, half the height of Germany and more over a week - about 2k kilometers. Comfortable.

Besides, we hit the top speed so that worked for me.

I used Sixt. They seemed to have really good rates, super friendly and there was no "Ring" clause that I could find.

I'd really just search around through every company you can find online. If you aren't going to drive Nürburgring then it is less of an issue who you use.
