Talk me out of this idea

Got laid off this week and now thinking about picking up mechanic specials on CL, doing the work, and then reselling them for extra cash.

Anyone else doing this? Is it possible to make money?

What appeals to me about this:
1) working for myself
2) income would be off the books so it wouldn't reduce my unemployment insurance
3) I've got tools!

Right, a dishonest person, but not me, might be tempted to not report this income to the EDD.

^^this. you have to find someone who has a dealership license or something of that sort to get into most auctions tho.

yeah best bet is auctions...my homie used to flip cars on CL and people would flag his posts because they would recognize the car (with new parts for a higher price)

I would spend the time learning a new skill and find a new gig. spending money when you don't have more coming in, then relying on selling something that isn't necessarily in high demand is a bad idea, especially if you have others that depend on you(i.e. wife, kids, house mates).

if you're single and live with your parents, go for it.

Bingo, a wife, two kids in daycare, a house payment. My time would be better spent learning some fresh engineering skills. But working on cars seems like more fun than learning Solidworks. Getting intellectually lazy in my old age.

Like on Wheeler Dealers!

Only you want to be both Mike and Ed, I can't help but notice that while those guys do sometimes make out with a few pounds, they also seem to lose a couple hundred quid from time to time, and they seem to have some REALLY cheap connections for parts.

When you get right down to it, if Ed China's time is worth anything- they actually lose a lot on every car they flip.

Restoring cars, whether its just fixing up dodgy rides and saving them from the scrapper-or bringing classics to concours condition is a hobby for people with money to burn, because there are few to no guarantees of return on investment.

Some of us would fare better taking the money to a casino (not me, I can't afford my daily driver)

The chance of picking up a bad investment are big when flipping cars not to mention you're competing with so many other people at the low end auto auctions.

There are also a lot of dishonest stuff that goes on at those auctions. I'll leave it at that.

If you're gonna do this, do it legit.
You can make a living doing what you're planning, but you gotta be legal.

if you've got 1+ years of savings you can burn through (wife approved, not credit) at current burn rate and want to do it legit as others have mentioned, go for it. otherwise you're just being irresponsible and risking the well being of your family/kids.

maybe take your kids out of day care for a bit and spend some time with them instead of working on cars. you'll save $$ without day care, you'll see your kids more than usual. win win, imho.

Good work guys, you've talked me out of it. It was just going to be a sideline until I get another engineering gig. My time is better spent finding the next job.
