survey for a psychology project
hey guys, i really need you help. Please be somewhat serious about this. I'm doing a psychology project and i'm going to ask you to read a short story and then give me your thoughts on it.
Please include your age and ethnicity because i will be analyzing how people of diff age and diff background responds to this type of situation. Please try not to go off topic as i really need to get this done. Thanks a lot.
I need about 5~10 people in this survey. Can be anonymous, but PLEASE PLEASE include your age, gender, and apprx age.
You can also contribute anything u have that relates from your past experiences or from your professional developement.
Here's the story::
A woman was near death from a rare form of cancer. There was one drug that the doctors thought might save her, recently discovered by a druggist in the same town. The drug was expensive to make--- about 400 for a small dose. But the druggist was charging ten times what the drug cost him to make---$4000.00 for a small dose.
The sick woman's husband, Heinz, went to everyone he knew to borrow the money, but he could get together about $2,000, half of what the druggist was charging. He told the druggist that his wife was dying and asked him to sell it cheaper or let him pay the rest later. But the druggist refusted, saying "No, I discovered the drug and I'm going to make money from it." So Heinz gets desperate and considers breaking into the man's store to steal the drug for his wife.
question for you: Should heinz steal the druge? why or why not?
thanks for reading and helping with my survey
u do not know how much i will appreciate it.

I guess I'll go first...
I would break into the store if I were Heinz. If it is either that or let her die. This seems like kind of a black market kind of thing anyway because you didn't mention any type of FDA approval or anything. This guy selling the drug isn't legit. I would still steal it anyway because even if I got arrested for it, the judicial system wouldn't slap me with too much punishment. I don't know much about the pharmaceuticals business, but 1000% mark-up seems pricey. (Although I probably paid that for my cat-back exhaust)

Its hard for me to unequivocally say steal the drug, but thats the way I'm leaning. I'd try other methods first, and only break in as the last straw. I assume that a direct diplomatic solution is already out of the picture (because the pharmacist didn't bend to the pleading), but possible federal involvment (forced diplomacy) might be better before commiting burglary.
But, if I understand the question correctly, I only have two choices. Let her die, or commit a crime to save her. Assuming that it would cure her, I would say break in. If it was not a proven drug, I would tell the pharmacist to shove it and try more established type of cure (unless my wife was willing to try the unproven drug).
Sorry man, it appears I can't give an easy answer to this question.

If he loves his wife, he'll steal it. he may get caught, he may serve time, he may go to hell, but a loved one's life is at stake. I doubt anybody would see it as anything other than an act of love and desparation.

Yes I think he should, anything to help ease the pain or cure his wife's suffering.
However, I think he must suffer the consequences of his actions.

Grab it when you can. True it's stealing. To save my wife, I'd steal it. Heck since the guy sounds like an A-hole, I'd kick his **** at the same time. Kill two birds with one stone. I'd break his kneecaps for good measure, and an old fashion stab and turn with the 'ol knife will do nicely.

Steal it, give it to his wife, she will be fine and he would prolly serve some time but have a wife thats alive after.
sometimes decisions related to family members ( life or death ) outweigh what the law says. If I have a chance to save a family members life, but it might be illegal, I would not even think twice about it.

Heinz should steal the drug. IMO, saving the life of his wife far outweighs any negative reciprocities his action warrants (a good lawyer could find a sympathetic jury to try this case from that small town). The pharmacist overcharging for a drug is exactly what's wrong w/ the world today. This story is not so far fetched when one looks at the current drugs available for cancer and AIDS, only the wealthy have access.

Steal it. No doubt. No second thought, no remorse, no regrets.
I'd be back there that night after Mr. Druggist went to sleep and I'd stop at nothing to get it. I wouldn't want to injure him, but at the same time, I'd take the extra couple years in prison for beating his a$$ if he got in the way, especially after I offered him 5 times what it costs him to produce the stuff.
