Question Suggestions and recommendations for a camera tripod purchase

As the title says...I would like input of all the awesome i-Club photographers on a purchase of a good camera tripod...

Any suggestions as to what qualities to look for and what brand or vendor to purchase from at a (hopefully) reasonable price. I am getting close to buying my first SLR (keeping fingers crossed), so I would like an accompanying tripod as I plan on doing long exposure shots...

My apologies in advance if this turns out to be a rather simple question, but I rather ask now than deal with hassle of returns and exchanges later.

Thanks in advance!

I don't have any specific suggestions, but I would tell you to get the best one you can afford, having gone through several cheap ones myself, I can say with some authority that most of the cheap ones are pretty much a waste of your money.

Yuri, what's your budget? tripods can cost from $30 to $1,000+. of course, you get what you pay for. tripods are one of those things even photographers have trouble finding which one is right because of the endless possibilities. as for brands, look at gitzo and manfrotto. gitzos are generally a bit more expensive, but have better quality. manfrottos are one of the best bang for the buck.

Jensen...$1,000+?!? Holy crap, that's as much as some cameras Does the thing take pictures for me as well? I guess my budget is on a cheaper side than. I do not want to spend more than $200 right now, I am just getting into digital photography as trying not to go all out...

^^ lol Nice.... Thanks I need a laugh...

Anyways... I went to Fry's and bought a Sony tripod. Was like $35
Folds up about the sizes of my cam bag and is light weight. Opens to about 4.5 feet tall.

I do wish to find a level on my next one. I might just add one to this. I love the size and weight of this one. Works well being clipped to my bag.

yea, when you get into the crazy carbon fiber and crazy heads they get expensive. if you're in san francisco, stop by calumet to play with the tripods they have.

I have a tripod you can take a look at, but only if you have soft hands.
