We should have lanes only for expert drivers and insurance price breaks for said drivers.

Our test should be harder and given in English only. Everyone should be required to retest every 5 years to maintain the expert classification. Everyone should be required to take a certain amount of drivers training courses. X amount of hours... say 14 hours for the normal cert. Say 40 hours for the expert cert. I don't know. Expert drivers can loose that cert. if they get so many violation points or at fault accidents.

Our tests are WAY too easy and there just isn't enough driver education. Most folks are not aware that you're suppose to move over for faster drivers, that flashing your lights at them is actually a courtesy not equal to flipping them off. People don't understand yield principles. Can't park for ****. The fast lane is truly for passing only. You know those double white lines on the commuter lanes... yeah that's a wall you stupid ****. Crossing over it is equivalent to hitting a wall and a $400 ticket.

Brights in fog is retarded. Driving with your headlights off in the rain or at dawn or dusk is retarded.

Checking the function of your head lights and brake lights every so often is a good idea.

We need to reduce how strict our smog laws are. Increase how hard the test is. Start requiring annual safety inspections or at least every 2 years. Too many dumb ****s driving around with un safe cars. That's way more hazerdous that putting an exhaust on your car. Hell most folks modifying their cars have the safest cars on the road... because we care.
+1.

I was surprised how easy I passed my permit and drivers test. I passed with flying colors on first try, with minimal effort. Some kids in my class saying that it was difficult really shock me, and really showed that they shouldn't be driving. These are the kids who get a brand spanking new Mercedes or BMW and crash within months of getting the car. Hell, a kid I know failed the permit test like 5 times, and drivers test 3 times, and once he got his license mommy and daddy bought him a brand spanking new E-Class Mercedes for a graduating present. Less then a month, totalled the car. What pisses me off is that the DMV gives people multiple times to retake the test, with limited restrictions, such as needing to wait a few weeks to retake the test.

I'd be surprised if California had enough common sense to see what is really going on in our state with such BS regulations, that only help people with no common sense.

The article basically said time behind the wheel is the one and only thing that helps and pretty much came right out and said drivers are not considered merely competent until they have at least 10 years of seat time. Not to mention, you cannot teach COMMON SENSE.

We already have different license classes, but not for the AVERAGE driver. We pretty much have Commercial / Class A (expert) and everyone else (Stupid).
Didn't agree then. Don't agree now.

Germany is not the U.S. and the U.S. is not Germany. Different roads. Different rules. Different needs. Different people.

Part of why ours have gone down recently is because we have put in place a more strict process for teens including not being able to have other teens in your cars. A graduated process. Etc.

Fatality rate in the U.S. are 4x's higher for teens than mature drivers. Experience, maturity, patience are all factors. By requiring drivers to actually spend time in the seat you are giving them experience. I think all high schools should go back to requiring drivers education as a one semester class. Don't want to take it... don't let them get parking passes or drive to school.

Nation wide all age bracket the U.S. has almost twice as many traffic fatalities than germany. My point was for ALL drivers... not just teens.

We have a LOT of drivers coming in to this country from other countries and getting licenses... new drivers to this country.

You can't just look at one segment in 2 countries and say one thing works and one doesn't.

I would gladly pay for my kid to take a drivers training course to gain experience. I'll personally be spending time teaching my daughter on and off the road.

I'd gladly pay to take advanced courses to get an advanced license if it meant lowered insurance rates and rights to certain lanes in certain places.

It's not any harder to enforce than car pool violations. If it's funded by the people that are doing it then it's not costing tax payers money. It's like traffic school. Do you think people learn jack crap at comedy traffic school? No. But they do it to get that point off their record.

i<3dirt. Money is always the issue. But there's no reason it shouldn't be self funded.

I'd pay $100-200 to take a once a week class for 2 months in order to get better insurance rates and access to special lanes. Hell... I think you should be required to have that license to buy certain vehicles.

Hell I'd pay $100 just so I could have a different looking license than those that don't care or don't want it... be like... yeah sucka... I got the advanced license.

^^Also the extra money could come from the fees of testing and classes and what not all the state has to do is run them.

I agree with you. We should have a thing where you have to drive with a permit for a 2 years with out getting pulled over or accidents. Then get a licence.

I'm not sure if you're joking or not. LEOs barely enforce the cell phone law, how the hell would they enforce a license restricted lane? Make it like a toll road where you have to display a license? Good luck with that.

This state is going to give illegals a driver's license. As much as I agree with this statement, good luck trying to get this ever to happen.

CA already requires a minimum of 6 with a licensed instructor. I highly doubt increasing it to 14 would make any noticeable impact. Stupid people are smart enough to know how to "fake" it to pass a test only to not care as soon as it's done.

I don't think it's people who don't know. I think it's people who don't give a rat's ***. Unfortunately, you can't teaching common courtesy.

All this is required to know to take the written permit test. Requiring more hours of licensed instruction or anything else will not fix stupid.

One part I do agree with. I was just thinking about how much better CA would be if we had something similar to Japan's Shaken. Obviously not as strict, but something that requires people to drive a car that's safe to be driven.

Just like our public schools, once you have lowered the standards, it's next to impossible to raise them. It's depressing, but the true fact is, idiots outnumber intelligent/courteous/smart people by a significant margin. (Watch the beginning of the movie Idiocracy, lol) So, once you make it accessible to them, you can't take it away.

The drivers tests are way too easy.

Just retook like 7 tests there. The regular drivers test. Was a joke.

I agree, I think our drivers tests are too short and too easy.

Sounds to me like the article agrees with me.

It's PART of the solution.

I read the article... some parts twice. I really don't think it's disagreeing with me. I think it's saying that it can help but it's not an end all be all. And I agree.

I wrote a big ol mess of a post and deleted it. I'd read it again more clearly but I have to run.
