Unhappy Subaru Warranty Question

Hello . I wanted to ask sum questions regarding Subaru warranty.. My car has recently suffered from some engine problems, and I asked the dealership if my warranty would be able to cover that. I was on the San Mateo bridge on Thursday going about 80, and suddenly, I heard serious engine knock, and rattle from under the car. I took an exit to see what was going on, and the car shut off completely at around 50mph, coming down to a stop. My power steering stopped working and all the check engine lights came on.. I had to tow the car from SM to SJ which is not kool. So the next day, I went to a local shop and they said it was the camshaft position sensor which kept the car from starting. They did install that and diagnosed the engine for further problems, and said I will need to replace the engine. The engine rattles all over the engine bay, and doesnt last very long until it dies again.

I do have a 5 year/60k mile drivetrain warranty, and did try to contact Stevens Creek Subaru about the warranty, but unfortunately, my car currently has 60,054 miles.. (yea ... sucks) so technically, i am over the warranty date but i still have until december of 08.. It sucks because it had no problems before, but all of a sudden it hits this major disaster . I even called the Subaru of North America and they said they cannot do anything about it, it is all up to the dealership that i take my vehicle to get repairs from. The service rep at Stevens Creek Subaru told me right away that it is impossible to get warranty benefits at this point, but i just wanted to ask for an opinion. Do you think i am exempt from the warranty at this point? or could there be any possible way that they will make an exception ?

good luck....

but I think you are screwed. if there was no documented problems before your warranty is up, SOA and especially the dealership is not on the hook.

honestly, any dealership will not have any say in this. If this is to be done under warranty SOA will have to authorize it since they will be paying the bill.

since you have mods.... your chances are none.

I'm kinda thinking the same thing. If it was documented....like the car had been in for some problem a few times before the warranty expired then it went. Then maybe you'd have a shot. Add no documentation up with even very minor mods and you'll have a tough one on your hands.

Best of luck.

well, I am pretty sure you are not running any engine managment and running a downpipe + BOV even on an STi is going to be bad.

As for your warranty, sucks man. you are probably SOL. I had this conversation with the fine folks at Santa Cruz and they said as soon as it is a mile over, the warranty is gone.

My advice, get the 06 motor that is for sale in the classifieds, then try to recoop some of the cash by selling the motor you pull out.

If I recall correctly, your 60K warranty goes for the 60K YOU had the car for.

Basically, if you bought the car with 100 miles on it - your 60k warranty is valid until you have 60.1K on the odometer.

interesting point. I have no idea. My car only had 10 miles on it though. Most cars sold at dealerships have very few. I know if I was buying a NEW car and it said 200miles on the OD I'd tell them to get me another one or knock the price down. Who knows how it got driven in that time.

I bought the demo car. 200 miles on it.

I now have 70,600~ miles on it, 50K of those miles running engine managment with an uppipe, and about 40K with a TBE.
I just added a manual boost controller and retune to boost at 17.5PSI.

I bought a spare td04 and a rebuild kit just in case something goes wrong.

Hope the OP gets everything sorted out. I'm thinking about a TBE + tune, but stories like this scare me!

Very true..

Mine had 140ish miles on it. But it took a 120 mile trip from another dealership.
In retrospect, I shoulda gone down to pick the car up myself... Oh well...
