And this is why Oakland needs police. The police are responsible for the bad upbringing and choices of its residents (not all). Btw the men were Pimps and the chicks were the prostitutes in the local area of International Blvd and 42nd Ave. I miss my old OPD job =).

You could triple the size of of OPD and nothing would change.
It must be like a daily routine for them. Almost like a "eh, we'll deal with that later" type of deal.

Problem is that with 80 officers laid off, there was no reform/restructuring of the department. They eliminated walking beats which is a key in fostering relations with the community as well as some special task force divisions, cut the 80 least senior officers, and reassigned as needed to fill beats. That was up to the chief, not the council/people. OPD has 3x as many internal affairs officers as officers on homicide with one of the highest murder rates in the country. This is how they structured to fix the decades of corruption, brutality, and downright ineptness. It's a force made to mop up, rather than protect and serve. Salaries stay high because of the danger of the position, yet the department doesn't alter itself to address/confront the danger. I was in the line of fire of several rounds yesterday in broad daylight at 40th and Broadway near downtown Subaru. Guy rushed a car in the street that I was directly across from while locking up my bike and unloaded on the front windshield. Cops still haven't called me to get a statement, but I'm sure I'll get a parking ticket any day now. As a lifelong Oakland resident I know we deserve better and need to educate people to choose leaders who will actually improve the city and lead reform where reform needs to happen.

Sad thing is lost in the press is the amazing job the new school superintendent Tony Smith is doing. This is Oakland's biggest problem and the reason for its high crime rate. When you have a system that reinforces hopelessness for generations + the legacy of the crack epidemic, you will get a generation prone to lash out at anyone and anything.

Yes, sadly smart people don't have kids, or if they do they only have one or two...
It's usually the idiots who don't have money/education/jobs that have dozens of kids, and if you project that into the next 100 years you'll see the decline of smart people and the influx of stupidity.
