Starter Help

Hi all.

I think my starter took a ****. Tried starting my car up. It clicks a ton of times, then just dies.

Anyone have any tips or advice on getting this sucker going? Car is currently parked at the restaurant that I had lunch.

I've heard banging on the starter. Any other ideas?

Thanks in advance.

If it clicks, it's probably battery

Radio works, interior lights works, windows work... but I'll check anyways. If I try to start the car and keep trying, it clicks a bunch of times and then stops.

Battery can still have enough juice to run those items but not enough to turn the car over.

Clicking usually means its the battery as stated above.

see if it's at least 12 volts

Okay. I'll try borrowing some jumper cables and will try to see if I can get it to turn over.

if it still does that when you try to jump it, then its the solenoid that's gone bad.

Quick fix for it then, take a long screwdriver, reach under where the starter is (driver side I believe) and cross the screwdriver between the two large terminals after you have turned the ignition on. This will bypass the starer solenoid and spin the starter up.

Not something you should do all the time, but can get you out of a fix.

I'll give these things a try. The more I think about it, the more I agree that the battery is not putting out enough charge.

Battery is easier to deal with than a starter

Two words...

Diehard Platinum!

Go to sears, get one, they are around $200 but, they are an AGM battery, fully sealed, made by odyssey with a grey plastic rather than their stock line black with red. However, unlike the odyssey namebrand line, the sears ones come with a 4 year no questions asked replacement, and 4 year prorated replacement after that (so 8 years total) where as odyssey only has a 1 year.
