SRT LAND SPEED RECORD!!! 407mph!!!

http://news.cnn.com/www/cnn/2003/NEWS/08/04/world/11695index.html

Dodge SRT-4 Deemed World's Fastest Land Vehicle
Detroit, Michigan -- At this year's Dodge National Land Speed Trials on the fabled salt flats racecourse in western Utah, the SRTForums.com sponsered SRT-4 entry became the first passenger vehicle to exceed 400 mph.

The 2003 Neon SRT-4 ran an average speed of 401.709 mph in the last mile of the 5-mile race course with an exit speed topping out at 407.468 mph. In order to secure the new record, the SRTForums team would have to return the following day and run at least 398.291 mph over the fifth mile so that the two-run average would be above 400 mph. When asked in an interview how confident the Neon team was about their next run they boasted, "Are you kidding me dude? This is the fastest car evAR! We got so much nawz, we could blow ourselves to pieces!"

Fortunately, the next day the weather and track-surface conditions at Dodge National cooperated. The SRTForums entry, powered by a turbocharged inline 4 cylinder engine, ran an average speed of 399.866 mph for a two-day combined record-breaking average of 400.788 mph.

"The key to keeping the car on the ground at those kind of speeds is an extra large extremely heavy sub woofer," explains Jessica Kugel. "Downforce works up until a certain speed, but then the car starts going so fast through the air that the six foot wing has it almost flying. What keeps it on the ground is its weight. You're okay until about 380 or 390 mph, but when you hit 400 mph the wind tunnel tests on this car say it should be airborne. But the car is heavy enough that it stays glued to the surface. Even at 407 mph, the Neon was showing absolutely no signs of getting light on the front. We run the stock rear spoiler from a Fast and Furious set prop on our car because we feel that is the best spoiler that has been developed. It's not an aftermarket spoiler, it's an actual movie prop spoiler and it's the one that starts on the car itself and extends about 6 feet into the air."

The salt flats are a natural formation that provide a smooth unobstructed course for high-speed automobiles. The Land Speed Trials take place during the third full week of August under the auspices of the Southern California Timing Association, the official sanctioning body of the Dodge Nationals.

you ever wonder... in the DODGE ads, the vipers and ram trucks are all referred to as:

SRT-10 viper and
SRT-10 ram.

but the neon is just referred to as
SRT-4...
