Spec Miata persons, what do you think of this car?

I talked with residentsmurf and he suggest I buy a stock car and prepare it. Wanted to see what people think of this car. Just looking to have some fun with my old man.

Here is what I know about it;

1992 Spec SCCA Miata:

Features:
-Built and driven by very experienced spec Miata specialists.
-Only one SCCA weekend since purchase + 3 test days
-RaceTech Professional Race Seat
-MOMO quick-release steering wheel
-New belts
-Welded-in professionally built roll cage with Nascar-style door bars
-Water, oil press. gauges
-Aluminum radiator
-Logbooks for SCCA
-Body in very good condition
-New paint job
-Proven fast and race prepared
-Placed 1st and 3rd in SCCA's driving school race weekend
-Completely SCCA approved with current log book

Extras:
-Center safety net
-Includes 2nd set of wheels, tires, spares (brake pads, etc.)

this is in response to me asking if the engine or tranny will need any work coming up.....

"The engine still runs very strong. Not using any oil. I do not think it needs a rebuilt. The tranny is also in excellent condition.
You can go racing now with it. This is a active car. We just drove it in a club event a month ago. All the right spec Miata suspension is on the car. The car is very competitive. The car has a current SCCA TAG. Belt are current. "

"Yes on LSD. As for the motor and clutch, it was replaced by the previous owner. I do not have exact mileage on them. As I said before, the motor is very strong and the tranny work very well. Hope that help.

Thanks. "

Yes. Absolutely yes. I ran this car with my daughter. Same situation as you.
This is the least expensive way to go have fun with your parent or kid.
We enjoyed very much. She is in college now. No time to go racing now.
Great car ready to go. And it is very competitive also. She came in first on her SCCA school race.

Let me know if you need more info.

Can prob get it for about 6k, as I said trying to have fun, not be a race champion. Seems like a good deal given all the small things that need to be done on top of everything to prepare a stock one?

Anybody?

I understand the idea of wanting to do everything your self from the bottom up, so you know exactly whats been done to the car, especially if you are tryingto be competitive and moneys no object.

But of your just getting started out, you can save WAY more money/time/effort by letting someone else do all the heavy lifting/spending on the build and get it second hand. Yes it might be better for you to do it all your self, and yes you might have to fix someone elses f-ups down the line, but its not like you're trying to go out there and try to run at the head of the pac (spec miatas can get REALLY competitive, Im sure you know!) so if your looking for a car that already set up for spec miata, you would have to spend at least twice the much on the car and mods to get it to where that one is, and thats not even factoring in your time/labor. fact is people never get out of selling a race car for even half of what they put into it, and thats going for pretty much every race car, less perhaps vintage. getting one second hand that someone already built up is def the way to go if your just starting out

Yeah I figure I should try and check it out. We just want something to have fun in, in the SCCA, the NASA looks INSANE, man what maniacs. I'm confident I can handle wrenching most stuff on the car given any special exceptions, especially the basics, and starting with a stock would help me be quick with working on the car like you say, but at the same time I want to do it asap, my dad isn't getting any younger. And we spoke about it in 2006, and nothings been done since. Most importantly we aren't trying to sink as much money as possible into this. Picked it b/c its fairly cheap for a lot of people. I know they are a lot of awesome cars that people spend a lot on, but from all I've researched and seen there are some mediocre ones as well.

One thing for me is I'd like to do 2 events say and just drive the car, and for sure drive it to to the school, as I want to avoid trailer cost as long as possible.. If its non op, can I just throw on a catted exhaust and get a smog then go to dmv and register? assuming it has a title?

That looks like a great car, all set up and ready to go. 6K for a race car is pretty cheap IMO. You'd want to trailer it, carrying extra wheels in a Miata isn't ideal. If you want to smog it, you'd probably need the stock exhaust and air box. You may have to back off the timing too as most advance it for more power. '92 is the OBDI with a 1.6 liter, simple, cheap and light. I've bought and sold a couple of spare working engines and transmissions for under $250 each when I had my '90.

You can check out NorCal Roadsters Index page , maybe someone there knows the car.

Yes I have watched a spec miata race before, seen them since I first looked into doing this 5 years ago, if ya read my post. What am I going to do with the car? Race spec miata with my pops on a lower budget.

Have you ever watched difference between Nasa and SCCA.

No I much rather register the car and use the outback or another vehicles for hauling. I do not want to buy a trailer right away, I do not want to store one right now or pay for one. Would much rather drive to the first couple times.

just wanted to make sure you knew what you were getting into

and Jeremy, I am calling Shenanigans on that video, there is not the typical traffic jam of 30+ cars at any given point on the tract at any time.

Yeah after a lot of research the SCCA really doesn't seem that bad. I think you are looking at the NASA stuff possibly? Theres newbs on the track it seems for scca. For example if you watch some peoples races @ laguna, or some first timers races, the racing looks nothing like the "crazy spec miata" in youtube videos that tends to be Nasa.

For example if you look at some nasa championship videos, I've never seen an scca sm race that looked like that, or even close. Theres like 20 wrecks a race.

If this guys young daughter can handle it, I'm sure we can too. My only real worries are if something major happens to the car, like a wreck.

Since you don't really plan to compete, buy a street car incase you want to sell it. Selling a race car is not easy and can take a LONG time. A mildly built street Miata would be a better buy if you want to drive it on the street, and it might be nicer to dad. Plus the race car has race car suspension, that doesn't usually do well on rough roads. And then get stuck in traffic and you won't have any AC, or radio, doesn't look like there are any cup holders either.

Just saying...

I want to run in the spec class, which requires the susp that is on the car. I do plan to compete I just don't care about spending gobbs of money to make a champion worthy car.
