Red face Some Network Help Needed

I'm trying to install AIM on my laptop here at work. I already have Yahoo! Instant Messenger and it connects fine (using the "Firewall with no proxy" selection), however AIM lacks this option and the auto discovery feature doesn't work.

I tried doing a 'netstat -na' to see on which port Yahoo! is connected, but the output doesn't list that connection.

Which port should I use? I tried 80 but didn't seem to work.

Thanks.

I would just ask the net admin from the office to help you.

I'm sure he'd be more than happy to adjust the company firewall so AIM works for you.

Just an idea....

does anyone else have this problem with aim? i'm using a router at home, and recently aim kinda freezes up on me, like i'll be on aim signed in, my buddy list is showing up, but then i dont get any msg's for like a minute or two, then all the msgs that were sent to me get shot to me all at once. this doesn't happen if i'm connected to the modem itself. thanks

This isn't really going to help, but it maybe that the dns server is not allowing it to connect to the aim service.

Also, it might help to check if anyone else in the office is having this problem. Then we can narrow it down to either your laptop or a setting on the server or router.

It looks like it's sending syn packets (netstat -na shows a "SYN_SENT").

I can nslookup and ping the server it's trying (login.oscar.aol.com) from my laptop, so it must be the firewall dropping the traffic.

most corporate firewalls won't allow instant messanger traffic through. there are too many security risks associated with it, and the potential for employees abusing it is equally high.

Thanks, you guys (except Robb). It's probably not going to work - I can't get trillian to connect either. I'll just live without AIM while I'm at work and stick to Yahoo!
